Corydoras panda, the panda armored catfish lets you see at first glance where the name comes from: its striking black and white pattern is strongly reminiscent of the panda bears that give it its name. At the same time, it is adorned with a handsome black eye patch and a black spot on the root of its tail. With its black dorsal fin, it almost holds up its own flag.
The Panda Cory is originally from South America, more precisely Peru, where it can be found in the Peruvian part of the Amazon, the Rio Ucayali, one of the two headwater river systems of the Amazon. Here it mainly inhabits rather shallow and sandy shore areas that have soft substrate throughout. Among other things, their feeding takes place here, where the catfish rummage through the soft substrate for food such as mosquito larvae, smaller worms and detritus.
Our Corydoras Panda are available in mixed sex.
Regarding their sex, Panda Corydoras can be distinguished by the somewhat bulkier body structure of the females and the pointed and extended dorsal fin of the males. In the aquarium they can be bred with some preparation. Especially with live food they can be brought into the mood. Larger water changes with different temperatures contribute their by the way and simulate the fertile rainy season in the rainforest. The females stick their eggs to smooth surfaces, from which the larvae hatch. These can be raised with freshly hatched Artemia nauplii, but also slipperfish or infusoria. To increase the survival rate of the young it is recommended to raise them in a rearing aquarium.
Corydoras Panda with a final size of just under 5 cm is one of the smaller Corydoras and is therefore suitable for aquariums from 54 liters. Panda Corydoras are sociable and social animals that derive their strength from group size. We recommend therefore the group attitude with at least 5 animals, since these care otherwise fast. The substrate should be fine sand , in which the pandas can dig to their heart's content without hurting their fine whiskers. Many caves and hiding places, but also dense planting in places contribute to their well-being. Since they do not like very bright lighting, the aquarium should be shaded in places, for example with the help of floating plants. However, care should be taken that the floating plant cover has gaps , since the Panda Corys are also intestinal breathers, which must regularly reach the surface to breathe. Ideally, their new home will have some current that they are already familiar with from their habitat. Regular and good water maintenance is necessary with these handsome dwarfs. At a water temperature between 22 and 26 °C they can be maintained very well. Their water should be soft with a total hardness (GH) between 2-19 °dGH and a pH of 6.5-7.5.
As very peaceful tankmates, the Panda Corys are easy to socialize with, even with well reproducing fish Dwarf shrimp speciesbut also fan shrimps and amano shrimps, as well as other fish coming from similar water parameters. Especially in a so called black water aquarium or even in an amazon biotope they come into their own. Dwarf crayfish inhabit the same water zone and can get dangerously close to their fins and seriously injure them, so socialization with them or even crayfish is not recommended.
Panda Corys are omnivores with a preference for meaty food . However, in the aquarium they can also be fed without problems with commercially available bottom tablets, food tablets or flake food and granulated food. From time to time they are happy about a variety in the form of live or frozen food, such as mosquito larvae, Artemia or also Enchytraea.
Our food recommendation: The NatureHolic Catfish Feed is a professionally formulated complete food especially for all sucking catfish. The food tabs contain important dietary fibers such as chitin and plant fibers, which are essential for the survival of catfish for a well-functioning digestion. With strong proteins from insect larvae as well as carbohydrate-rich vegetables NatureHolic Catfish Feed provides all sucking catfish optimally with all important building materials for a fast and healthy growth. The extra hard chips can be scraped off by the catfish close to nature - here they really have to do something for their food! An occupation like in nature.
Our plant recommendation: Use for the planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
