Product information
Panther crab - Parathelphusa pantherina
This pretty crab with its spotted pattern is something very special. Despite its "wild" name - which refers to the spotted pattern - it is also relatively compatible within species, provided that the aquarium is structured so well that the animals can get out of each other's way. With larger fish they can be kept together wonderfully. But then you have to reckon with the fact that no offspring will come up. If you want to breed them, we recommend a species tank. - Garnelio
Description

The panther crab Parathelphusa pantherina is a purely aquatic crab. On land it is almost not found. Even in the aquarium it does not need a land part, but should have a possibility to sit outside the water. This can be easily created with a root sticking out of the water or an appropriate stone structure. The Panther Crab originates from Lake Matano on Sulawesi/Indonesia.

The animals have a white-yellowish to yellow-orange ground color and are covered with dark brown to black spots. With approx. 5 cm carapace width it becomes relatively large. The males can be distinguished from the females by the shape of the abdominal shield. As with all crabs, it is wider and rounder in females and shaped similar to a U, while in males it is smaller, narrower, and pointed, resembling a V.

After mating, the females of the panther crab carry large eggs under this abdominal flap, which hatch into fully developed young crabs that survive in freshwater after several weeks. They are strongly cannibalistic and therefore need many hiding places. Brown autumn leaves are ideal for this purpose, but ceramic rolls, caves, coconut halves and so on are also optimal.

The Panther Crab needs at least 50 l in single keeping, for a pair or a group of two females and one male 80 to 100 l are required accordingly. The aquarium must bewell structured in group keeping , because the Panther Crab is not very aggressive within the species. The aquarium must be escape-proof as with all crabs.

The Panther Crab specializes in mainly carnivorous food . Small, slow fish are hunted, and snails are readily eaten. however,  Parathelphusa pantherina will also happily eat a special crab food for carnivorous species, frozen foods, and protein foods. It usually leaves plants alone.

The panther crab can be well socialized with larger peaceful fish. Many customers keep them successfully in Malawi and Lake Tanganyika tanks. They can also be kept together with dwarf shrimps, if the demands on the water values are suitable. From Lake Matano, the Panther Crab is used to a high pH and also high water temperatures.

Our food recommendation: We recommend Crab feed from Natureholic.

Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.

Expert Tip: We recommend when keeping fish the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
