Pimpled lace snail - Melanoides granifera

The Genoppte Turmdeckelschnecke Tarebia granifera, also called Nöppi, belongs to the family of Turmdeckelschnecken, the Thiaridae. It has a beautiful, up to 1.8 cm long, elongated shell, which is a bit thicker and more sculpted than in other trumpet snails. This gives it a very beefy appearance. The shell is light brown to reddish brown in color and often has a fine black dot pattern. The foot of the Genoppten Turmdeckelschnecke is black.

The genoppi is separately sexed, but mainly females are found in aquaristics. They give live birth to their offspring and are capable of parthenogenesis, or virgin reproduction. In this process, the female animal clones itself, so to speak, and gives birth to noisy genetic twins of itself. The breeding of the Genoppten Turmdeckelschnecke is no problem at all, and already a single animal can multiply strongly. If you have a good food supply, you will have a lot of noppis in the aquarium very quickly - if you want to limit their population a bit, you have to be quite disciplined when feeding them.

Tarebia granifera do not need to be fed , they live on the remains they find, on algae and dead plant parts. The Nöppi does not go to living plants.

The Genoppte Turmdeckelschnecke displays an extraordinary behavior, which makes it a useful helper in all aquariums, in aquariums with fine gravel or sand even a necessary must: It burrows - comparable to earthworms on land - the substrate of the aquarium, loosens it, prevents hardening and deposits and thoroughly mixes the different layers. Therefore, they are inconspicuous and rarely seen even at high population densities. Only when it gets dark do they venture into the open water and can then sometimes be found on the aquarium glass.
