Pink ramshorn snail - Planorbella duryi duryi

The pink posthorn snail is the soft pink shimmering color variant of the originally brown colored Planorbella duryi, which originates from the south of North America, but can now be found in the aquarium hobby all over the world. The pink color form has a transparent, whitish shell through which one can see the red body shimmering, which in the mixture then results in a more or less delicate pink, depending on the thickness of the shell - a true girls dream, and in combination with other colorful inhabitants often the icing on the "i". The pink ramshorn snail, often called pink PHS, reaches a shell diameter of up to 2.5 cm. Post horn snails are hermaphrodites, and they are even capable of self-fertilization. Then only about 4-8% of the eggs are viable, but this can be enough to build up a population. However, sexual reproduction is generally preferred.

The egg clutches of pink ramshorn snails are watch-glass shaped: they are round and have a firm lid that curves upward. Within the clutch, the eggs lie neatly side by side on one level. Pink posthorn snails lay their clutches on all surfaces in the aquarium: on plants, wood, the glass, stones, on other snails, on the filter, ... The young snails hatch after two to three weeks, the duration depends on the temperature. Pink PHS reproduce well to very well depending on the food supply. If the aquarium is overfed, you will quickly have a lot of snails. Basically post horn snails are very good and easy to breed food snails for example for predatory snails or puffer fish.

If you want to keep the color pure, you should not associate the pink post horn snail with other colored post horn snails; the colors mix, and often a rather dirty brown-blue-pink comes out.

However, the pink ramshorn snail is not only pretty, but also immensely useful. Their characteristic of being very good feeders makes them the health police in the aquarium. Pink post horn snails take care of everything that would otherwise rot away in the aquarium: plant remains, leftover food, dead animals, other waste ... in addition, they also eat algae deposits and biofilms and thus ensure a clean aquarium. Often post horn snails are warned against in the aquarium, because they can multiply strongly - this is then however always because of too much food, which would be very harmful for the biological system in the aquarium in the long run also without post horn snails and is reflected for example then in algae plagues and/or ill animals. You only have to feed the pink post horn snail if you want to breed it as a food snail in large quantities. Then it is grateful for vegetables, green food, fish food, special snail food, ... Like most water snails, the pink post horn snail is not a pure herbivore and also likes to take some frozen food or other protein containing food. On principle, the pink post horn snail does not go to live animals and healthy plants.

The pink post horn snail can besocialized excellently with peaceful fish, but also with dwarf shrimps and other peaceful snails and mussels . If you can live with the fact that some of the pretty snails will be eaten, you can of course keep the pink PHS in an aquarium with dwarf crabs or large crabs or in an aquaterrarium with crabs . Like the other color variants of Planorbella duryi, the pink ramshorn snail has no special requirements to the water values. In harder water it lives however clearly longer than in soft water.
