The star plant Pogostemon stellatus was introduced from Oceania (Australia & Papua New Guinea). It is also known as Star Rotala (although it is not really a Rotala) or under its synonym Eusteralis stellata.
Pogostemon stellatus is a really very attractive stem plant for the aquarium and fits perfectly in the middle ground to background. It grows to a height of about 15-25 cm. The fine structures are optimal for small shrimps, here they can hide and find a lot of growth on the surfaces.
The star plant is beautifully colored - in addition to fine green leaves, especially the shoots are reddish with sufficient light and nutrients. With little nitrate in the water, the colors become much more intense. The leaves are arranged in a star shape on the stem. The shoots of the star plant grow upright, they branch willingly. Pogostemon stellatus has some requirements: a good iron supply should always be given, otherwise the shoot tips turn yellow to whitish. Plenty of light is a must, and in an aquarium with CO2 fertilization Pogostemon stellatus grows much faster and nicer than without.
If its high nutrient requirements are met, the star plant grows very quickly and is then also wonderfully suited to displace unwelcome algae.
Pogostemon stellatus ispropagated by cuttings from side shoots or the main shoot. This Pogostemon tolerates pruning very well, you can simply leave the old plants in the ground for rejuvenation and cut them back sharply. They will willingly sprout again, and the cut shoots can be used elsewhere in the aquarium to create several groups of this beautiful aquarium plant.
Here you buy the star plant as an InVitro version, which comes from tissue culture. Pesticide use is not necessary in this method of cultivation, so the plant can be used in the aquarium without quarantine. It is completely free of parasites, snails or pathogens. The culture medium should be removed with running water before planting into the aquarium.
