Riccia fluitans, the pond liverwort, is actually a floating plant that floats on the water surface - ideal for breeding tanks, young fish find great hiding places here, and gourami as well as fighting fish love to build their foam nests in the floating cushions. However, if Riccia is tied onto small flat stones, it can also be cultivated wonderfully as a foreground plant under water. Takashi Amano has made this type of use known worldwide.
The finely branched, bright light green shoots of the pond liverwort thus form a beautiful ground cover in which young shrimps can hide excellently. They also seek out small suspended particles deposited in the pads and eat biofilms that settle on the enormously large surface area formed by the fine shoots.
Riccia does not form adhesive organs under water, so it does not attach itself to the substrate. Every now and then, therefore, it is necessary to cut back the pads to prevent them from floating up, and to reattach the pond liverwort.
InVitro plants grown in the laboratory are basically free of co-inhabitants such as snails, tiny crabs or worms, and the cultivation method eliminates the need for pesticides of any kind. In Vitro cultivated plants like this pond liverwort can therefore be used directly in the aquarium without a quarantine period - simply rinse off the clear nutrient liquid and plant.
Our recommendation: For a splendid plant growth we recommend the use of the NatureHolic fertilizer series and for new setups the Premium Nutrient Substrate NatureHolic GroundBooster.
