Pond post horn snail - Planorbarius corneus

The European ramshorn snail(Planorbarius corneus) grows significantly larger than the common small ramshorn snail Planorbella duryi. Their shell has a distinct structure and is solid brown to dark brown. European post horn snails grow up to 4 cm in size, making them much more impressive than their small aquarium cousins. Besides the completely dark form, there is also a form with an orange body and likewise dark house.

The lung sn ail Planorbarius corneus is adapted to oxygen-poor water - not only can it breathe atmospheric oxygen with its lung bladder, it is also one of the very few aquatic snail species to have red blood with the blood pigment hemoglobin, which serves well for the snail's oxygen supply.

The European posthorn snail is separately sexual, but can presumably self-fertilize. However, it always prefers sexual reproduction. Even in the pond, the European posthorn snail attaches its primordial glass-shaped clutch to hard substrates. The eggs in the clutch are always arranged on a plane, and the spawn ball is surrounded by a hard shell that protects it. In the pond, the posthorn snail reproduces during the warm season, and in winter it hibernates at the bottom of the pond. It can overwinter in the open if the pond does not freeze completely.

It does not need to be fed in the open, it feeds on algae and dead plant remains as well as leaves that fall into the pond.

Of course, you can also keep the European post horn snail in the aquarium. There it is not quite as robust as Planorbella duryi, but it also gets used to the conditions in the house. A lowering of temperature in winter suits their nature very well. In the aquarium it also likes to eat algae and plant remains, but also likes fish food remains, shrimp food and special snail food. If fed sparingly, there is no need to fear too high a reproduction rate.

The European posthorn snail is quite adaptable when it comes to water values, but it does not like too high temperatures. Medium to hard water is preferred.
