Proserpinaca palustris - NatureHolic InVitro

The beautiful Proserpinaca palustris, also called American cambium or mermaid plant, is not too difficult to keep. It grows relatively slowly, does not grow very tall, branches little, and is not particularly demanding in other ways. What makes it a special and highly desirable plant for planted aquariums is its beautiful red to orange color.

With CO2 fertilization and at nitrate values of about 5-10 mg/l and phosphate values of 1.5-2 mg/l, the comb leaf shines intensely orange-red. If there is more nitrate in the water, the plant turns a  lighter to greenish shade of orange. It can take a while for the plant to change color in the aquarium, in the beginning it is often still pure green.

As a small peculiarity, it can be considered that the mermaid plant should be rejuvenated from time to time - to do this, discard the older part growing near the bottom and plant the upper, younger shoots in its place. You can also propagate the plant by head cuttings.

This comb leaf comes from the laboratory, from InVitro tissue culture, and therefore does not bring algae, snails, parasites or pathogens .
