Rainbow Minnow - Notropis chrosomus - DNZ (Aquarium & Pond)
If there's one fish that can keep you in a good mood even on rainy days, it's the Rainbow Shiner - better known as the Rainbow Minnow. Description

The Rainbow Minnow, Notropis chrosous, also known as the "Rainbow Shiner", is very popular among bio-pot fish aquarists, but also among pond owners - because this beautiful fish can be kept indoors as well as outdoors. Their natural habitat are rivers of the American southern states, such as the Mobile River to the Alabama River. Their eye-catching shiny scales on the body, which sparkle and glitter spectacularly especially in sunlight, make this small schooling fish so popular, which is also very easy to care for.

Rainbow minnows belong to the carp family and have an elongated body with a terminal mouth. Their gray body has a red lateral line, below which is a row of glossy scales that can shimmer greenish to yellow. Above the back they shimmer turquoise to purple. Especially when the animals are very comfortable, they develop intensified colors, even more so the heads and the fins turn in shades of blue, which almost result in neon colors. They grow to about 6-8 cm long, reaching sexual maturity at about 5.5 cm.

The peaceful Rainbow Shiners can be socialized very well and also remain permanently in the pond, if it is more than 90 cm deep and prepared against freezing through, for example with an ice free holder or a pond thermostat. The care in the aquarium is also possible from an edge length of 80 cm. This can be well planted in places, but should offer enough space for swimming, because Rainbow Shiner are sporty comrades who like to do their rounds. The substrate plays a rather subordinate role, provided that there are penny pe bbles or similar pebbles on it, because in these the animals spawn. A very good filtration provides for a perfect water hygiene, introduced current increases their well-being, but also the oxygen content in the water. The great Rainbow Minnows are quite undemanding to their water parameters and can be maintained at temperatures between 4-26 °C, but also at pH values between 6-8.5 without any problems.

Externally Rainbow Shiners are almost indistinguishable in sex, especially with juvenile specimens this is rather difficult. The readiness to mate and change color occurs after their first winter. Males ready to spawn show even more magnificent colors than usual, which is why they are called "Rainbow Shiner", because they show a real firework of rainbow colors. Females that are ready to mate become rounder and show a clear spawning pattern. The animals spawn over pebbles, from which hatch after about three to five days young, which are initially still dependent on very fine live food. For breeding, the winter phase is almost essential, so that gonadotropin can develop in the pituitary gland, which is necessary for reproduction.

The peaceful animals can be socialized prima with other peaceful species, as schooling fish they attach importance to their group, we therefore recommend their keeping at least in groups of 10.

Rainbow minnows feed in the wild on approaching insects and insect larvae. However, in the pond or aquarium they can also be fed without problems with commercial dry food such as flake food or granulated food. Also live and Frozen food such as artemia, mosquito larvae or enchytrae spice up their diet well.

Our food recommendation: This NatureHolic main feed is a professional staple food for all aquarium fish. We supply Hauptfeed in the form of soft granules, which, thanks to its grain size of half a millimeter, can be easily ingested by small to medium-sized fish. The soft consistency resembles the texture of insect larvae in nature and protects the fish mouth from micro-injuries.

Our plant recommendation: For planting, use NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planaria and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.

Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.

Hallo Paul, vielen Dank fuer deine Frage!

Hallo Rainer, vielen Dank fuer deine Frage!
