The red neon (Paracheirodon axelrodi), also called cardinal tetra, belongs to the tetras and comes from South America. There it lives in rivers with humic, quite soft water.
This pretty little ornamental fish, which is very popular in aquaristics, grows to a length of 2.5 to 5 cm. The strong red longitudinal stripe along the underside gave it its name. Striking also the neon iridescent blue longitudinal stripe above.
The females are somewhat stronger than the males and have "more belly". In the wild the Red Neon only lives about a year, in the aquarium it is reported to live 10 years or more.
The Red Neon is a schooling fish and should be kept in groups of 10 or more.
Propagation of the Red Neon in the aquarium is difficult. Very soft, acidic water with a pH of about 5 and about 25 °C is required. A separate rearing tank is absolutely necessary, the adults eat larvae. The juveniles are raised with Artemia euplii.
The Red Neon has much less demands on the water values for keeping. It needs rather soft to middle hard water and a temperature of 22-30 °C.
As a typical predator this tetra eats besides the usual fish food also animal food in the form of frozen food, freeze-dried FD food or live food.
The socialization of the relatively peaceful, small remaining Red Neon with dwarf shrimps is possible. However, this aquarium fish may eat juvenile shrimp, it should be kept in the aquarium only with robust and very well reproducing species such as Neocaridina davidi or with the Sulawesi Island Shrimp.
Our food recommendation: The NatureHolic main feed is a professional staple feed for all aquarium fish. Main feed we supply in the form of soft granules, which thanks to its grain size of half a millimeter can be easily absorbed by small to medium-sized fish. The soft consistency resembles the texture of insect larvae in nature and protects the fish mouth from micro-injuries.
Our plant recommendation: For planting, use NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planaria and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
