Red of Rio - Hyphessobrycon flammeus - DNZ
The beautiful Red of Rio is an old acquaintance in aquaristics. These beautiful group fish will grace any planted aquarium. They don't need quite as soft water as many other tetras, and they are considered an ideal fish for anyone who wants to start keeping tetras but hasn't had much experience with them. With shrimps the Red of Rio can be kept super together, if sufficient hiding places for the shrimps are available. - Garnelio

Description

The high-backed Rio red (Hyphessobrycon flammeus) was named for its occurrence and coloration: It originates from the rivers around Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

These popular aquarium fish have reddish ventral fins and a bright caudal fin, and their abdomen is also red in color. In the front area our Red of Rio is golden colored, now and then some Reds of Rio have here also two dark, more or less intensive cross stripes. The Red of Rio becomes only about 3-4 cm long, the attractive aquarium fish belongs to the tetras, recognizable by the small adipose fin on the back, directly in front of the caudal fin. Males are slightly more slender than females.

Since Hyphessobrycon flammeus is an aquarium fish that likes to live in the company of conspecifics, Reds of Rio should only be kept in groups of 10 or more. If kept well, Reds of Rio can reach an age of about 4 years in the aquarium.

The Red of Rio goes well with rather large shrimp such as Amano shrimp or Fan shrimp, but also with well reproducing dwarf shrimp such as Neocaridina davidi (Red Fire and Co), Neocaridina palmata (White Pearl) or Sulawesi Inland shrimp. For shrimp juveniles to grow large, they need hiding places and fine feshy plants such as moss cushions. The Red of Rio also fits very well into a classic community aquarium.

Hyphessobrycon flammeus likes densely planted aquariums, in which it finds much cover. In such planted aquariums the fish can be seen much more often and in more beautiful colors than in freer tanks, where they hide more and are rather pale colored. The aquarium should also not be too bright, a blanket of floating plants dims the light accordingly. The Red of Rio prefers water temperatures below 24 °C and likes somewhat softer to medium hard water.

In the wild, the Red of Rio, as a typical omnivore, likes to eat fine foods such as cyclops, mosquito larvae, flake food and so on. Juvenile shrimp may eventually be eaten, but the beautiful aquarium fish does not prey on larger shrimp. Small crustaceans containing carotene, such as Artemia and water fleas, help the Red of Rio to retain its colors.

In habitat, the Red of Rio is threatened with extinction, but all Hyphessobrycon flammeus in aquaristics have come from breeding facilities for many years. Breeding in the aquarium is not difficult either - the Red of Rio is actually recommended for beginners in tetra breeding. A pair is kept in the spawning tank until the female has spawned. The eggs are laid in dense plants such as a moss cushion . Afterwards, the parent fish should be returned to the large tank because they would predate on spawn and also eat fry. The young Reds of Rio are fed with fine dust food and Artemia euplii.

Our food recommendation: This NatureHolic main feed is a professional staple feed for all aquarium fish. Main feed we supply in the form of soft granules, which thanks to its grain size of half a millimeter can be easily absorbed by small to medium-sized fish. The soft consistency resembles the texture of insect larvae in nature and protects the fish mouth from micro-injuries.

Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free from algae spores, bacteria and fungi.

Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
