The Red Onyx (Neocaridina davidi "Red Onyx") is a fairly new breeding form of the backstripe shrimp or algae shrimp Neocaridina davidi. It is a deep dark reddish brown. Under low light it appears almost black, under good light you can see the deep shimmering wine red . Originally Neocaridina davidi comes from biotopes on the island of Taiwan, but the Red Onyx was bred in an aquarium in Taiwan. Here you buy animals of the famous shrimp breeder Leon Su alias Sky Fish in extremely high color quality.
Neocaridina davidi is very adaptable and occurs in nature in hard to soft water and in stagnant as well as in flowing mostly very humic waters.
Neocaridina davidi "Red Onyx" is a well suited dwarf shrimp for beginners in shrimp keeping, because it is as robust and adaptable as the rest of the beautiful colorful forms of Neodaridina davidi. Since this is still a fairly young morph, however, the offspring must still be bred quite strictly selectively, because the animals can still disperse strongly.
For an aquarium with Neocaridina davidi "Red Onyx" we recommend a substrate of gravel or sand. The shrimp tank can be well planted. The Red Onyx like to eat fine algae coverings of diatoms or loose green algae, and they especially like biofilms. Shrimp tubes or densely growing moss cushions provide good hiding places for the shrimp.
The cute Neocaridina davidi "Red Onyx" are peaceful group animals. 10 to 20 dwarf shrimps form a good starting population. It should be noted that not all color varieties of the species Neocaridina davidi should be kept together, because wild colored offspring often occur in these mixes. Especially with a new and high quality color form like the Red Onyx such a mixture would be a pity, therefore we recommend here the color-pure attitude in a kind tank, possibly with peaceful snails. Also a socialization with Nanofishes, which do not regard the shrimps as snack and which are also not too curious, would be conceivable.
Neocaridina davidi "Red Onyx" belong as backstroke shrimp to the specialized reproduction type. After mating the females attach between approx. 20 and 40 quite large eggs under their abdomen to their webbed feet. There they perform brood care until the young crawl out of the eggs after about 3-4 weeks. They grow up without problems in fresh water and can stay in the aquarium of their parents.
Neocaridina Red Onyx shrimp are omnivores and scavengers. Brown autumn leaves in the aquarium form a good permanent food. Furthermore, it is best to provide the animals with a good shrimp food primarily based on vegetable matter and supplement this diet with a suitable protein food once or twice a week.
Our food recommendation: The soft Mainfeed Softpads from NatureHolic are designed for daily feeding. They contain all the nutrients shrimp need for shell development, egg formation and growth. During the production we pay attention to a gentle and environmentally friendly production, where the vitamins and other valuable ingredients are preserved as much as possible.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planaria and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
