from over 3,000 reviews "The red scissor crab, scientifically described as Cherax quadricarinatus, is a large growing, rather peaceful crab from Australia. We supply juveniles with a body length of 4-5 cm. An adult red scissor crab reaches a body length of up to 30 cm. It has a blue body base color, often with orange joints on the scissor legs and with yellow to whitish spots on the carapace. Adult males have the eponymous red claw blister on their claws, which can be used to reliably distinguish them from females. In juveniles, the sexes are distinguished by the sexual openings on the underside. In males these so-called gonopores are located at the base of the fifth pair of legs, in females at the third pair of legs.
Red scissor crabs are often nocturnal, but can also be seen during the day, especially when food is available. Cherax quadricarinatus can be kept in aquariums from 100 cm edge length. These relatively compatible crayfish can also be kept in pairs in this size, provided that the aquarium is furnished with wood and stones in a varied way and offers the Quadris possibilities to avoid each other, especially after a moult. The aquarium can be planted with hard respectively fast growing plants, Cherax quadricarinatus however is a gardener, now and then soft plants are also nibbled. Alternatively floating plants are suitable for greening. The red scissor crab feels comfortable in slightly alkaline water with a pH of 7 to 8.5 and a temperature of 24 to 27 °C, hardness plays only a minor role. A high oxygen content is a must. This can be achieved by using a bubbling stone, by raising the filter outlet and letting the water splash into the aquarium, or by using an oxydator.
Adult Cherax quadricarinatus feed mainly on plants, but they will not say no to a protein snack now and then (two to three times a week). Snails that reproduce well are ideal as a live food source. Juvenile, i.e. growing Cherax quadricarinatus require significantly more protein and should be provided with an appropriate food three to four times per week. Well-suited permanent food is brown autumn leaves, which are also eaten preferentially in nature. Special crab food is also suitable, as are greens and vegetables such as pumpkin. Protein can be provided either by a protein food such as Natureholic Proteinfeed or by frozen food, FD food and so on.
The red scissor crab is not difficult to breed. The females carry 150 to 300 eggs once a year, from which the young crayfish hatch after a gestation period of up to six weeks. They are highly cannibalistic among themselves and require as many hiding places as possible in perforated bricks, under autumn leaves, in ceramic rolls or in special crayfish burrows.
Adult red scissor crabs can be kept together with smaller shrimp without any problems, but not with fan shrimp or large-armed shrimp, with other crabs or with crabs. Juvenile crayfish, on the other hand, will also go to dwarf shrimp due to their increased protein requirements if they do not get enough protein in their diet. Socialization with larger fish such as Malawis is also possible without any problems.
Our food recommendation: Freshwater crayfish have a very varied diet in the wild. The Natureholic Crab Feed Sticks contain in a biologically balanced form only those ingredients that these crayfish in this or similar form to their natural food spectrum. This naturally supports and promotes moulting, growth and reproduction. Due to their protein content they are ideally suited for omnivorous crayfish of the genera Procambarus, Cambarus, Cambarellus, Astacus and the Cherax crayfish from Australia, which are basically omnivores that like to eat animal as well as vegetable food. The crayfish of the genus Cherax from Papua also like to eat a portion of animal food when they are young, but later they switch mainly to plant food.
Our plant recommendation: Use the following for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
