Product information
Smallest dwarf crab - Cambarellus diminutus
The very peaceful Cambarellus diminutus is so to speak the dwarf among the dwarf crabs. With a body length of 2.5 cm it does not grow larger than an adult Red Fire shrimp. They should be fed a varied diet. Propagation is quite easy, but the baby shrimp need sufficient hiding places to grow up safely. The blue color form is very popular, but has not yet been reliably established in breeding. - Garnelio
Description

The smallest dwarf crayfish Cambarellus diminutus is very peaceful and remains very small at about 25 mm. Cambarellus diminutus originates from the USA (Mississippi and Alabama). It is very variable in color, light to grayish brown or even somewhat bluish or reddish with a somewhat irregular darker spot pattern on the abdomen.

Male Cambarellus diminutus have V-shaped, handle-shaped gonopods. They are located on the ventral side between the carapace and pleon (the abdomen). Sexually mature females can be recognized by their sexual opening (annulus ventralis) on the roots of the second pair of walking legs. Cambarellus diminutus is quite easy to reproduce: After mating, females attach 20 to 30 eggs to the webbed legs under their abdomen. After 4 to 6 weeks, fully developed juvenile crayfish hatch from these eggs and remain under the mother's pleon for several more hours to days until they leave her and begin an independent life. Although Cambarellus diminutus is not very cannibalistic, the young crayfish may still predate on each other, so they need plenty of hiding places: brown autumn leaves (which also make good permanent food), burrows, ceramic rolls, or even perforated bricks.

Cambarellus diminutus are not suitable for open aquariums. These dwarf crayfish are masterful climbers and will even come up the silicone seam. The tank therefore needs an absolutely tight fitting lid. With root wood and stones structures can be created, which divide the aquarium and offer a visual protection to the crayfish, so the rather solitary animals can retreat if necessary. Basically, there should be one hiding place more than crayfish in the aquarium. Cambarellus diminutus do not go to plants and do not dig, so they are suitable for planted aquariums.

Basically, you should not mix different dwarf crayfish species, because the animals can not communicate with each other and the stress factor is very high. Fish sleeping on the bottom and also fan shrimp may be nipped despite the low aggressiveness of the crayfish. As a North American species, Cambarellus diminutus is potentially a carrier of crayfish plague. While this parasite does not harm crayfish from North America itself, it inevitably kills all other species. Therefore, Cambarellus diminutus should not be released into the wild.

When it comes to food, Cambarellus diminutus is easy to please. Like all dwarf crayfish it likes to eat various commercially available food, special crayfish food is of course ideally suited. In addition, vegetables are also taken with pleasure, also frozen food and green food such as nettle is popular.

Our food recommendation: Freshwater crayfish have a very varied diet in the wild. The Natureholic Crayfish Feed Sticks contain in a biologically balanced form only those ingredients that these crayfish in this or similar form to their natural food spectrum. This naturally supports and promotes moulting, growth and reproduction. Due to their protein content they are ideally suited for omnivorous crayfish of the genera Procambarus, Cambarus, Cambarellus, Astacus and the Cherax crayfish from Australia, which are basically omnivores that like to eat animal as well as vegetable food. The crayfish of the genus Cherax from Papua also like to eat a portion of animal food when they are young, but later they switch mainly to plant food.

Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.

Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.

Hallo Steffen, vielen Dank fuer deine Frage!

Hallo Bernadett, vielen Dank fuer deine Frage! Wir raten ab, das Becken ist sehr klein und es wird hier zu Aggressionen gegenueber Garnelen und Schnecken kommen.
