The beautiful bright orange colored fire tetra, fire tetra or sparkle tetra Hyphessobrycon amandae is a great splash of color in the aquarium. The beautiful schooling fish originates from the Mato Grosso in Brazil / South America. There it lives in acidic streams in white water. The somewhat fuller female sparkle tetras grow only about 2-2.5 cm long, the slimmer males remain even smaller with 1.5-2 cm. The males are also somewhat more intensely colored than the females.
The socialization of the rather quiet sparkling tetra with shrimp works really well thanks to this very small body size. Only the very smallest baby shrimp may be eaten, even a few days old, somewhat larger juveniles cannot be handled by the sparkle tetra. With small peaceful fish, which also prefer soft, slightly acidic water, the socialization also works out smoothly, and even with peacefully minded dwarf crayfish the rather surface or aquarium center oriented tetra can be kept well.
The body of the Sparkling Tetra is translucent and bright orange in color. You can see the fish's organs and skeleton through the skin. The tip of the dorsal fin is adorned by a more or less intense dark spot. In soft water the orange color just glows, in harder water these ornamental fish become pale and they also do not live as long.
Hyphessobrycon amandae is an extremely peaceful minded and calm group fish. When stressed, Fire Tetras will form a shoal, when calm and chilled, they will stand individually or in mini-groups in the plants or swim around the aquarium. We recommend a group size of at least 10 of the small luminous sparks in the aquarium.
The Sparkling Tetra is a real classic in aquaristics and has been kept in aquariums for many years. Dense marginal planting has proven successful, while the fish is also very grateful for some swimming space in the center of the aquarium. Hyphessobrycon amandae needs soft to maximum medium hard water and a pH in the slightly acidic to maximum neutral range. The ideal water temperature is between 24-28 °C.
Hyphessobrycon amandae is quite demanding in terms of breeding, but interesting. Fire tetras, like all tetras, are free spawners and spawn predators. For breeding the water must be very soft and acidic, a GH below 5 and a very acidic pH between 5.5 and 6.5 are necessary. The breeding tank should have a water temperature around 24 °C and be densely planted. A spawning grid or thick pebbles at the bottom are advantageous. The female lays between 10 and 100 eggs in the open water. After spawning, the adult fish are returned to the original aquarium. The larvae of the sparkling tetra swim freely only after 2-4 days. At first they eat finest dust food and slipper animals and a little later rotifers and artemia euplii, still a little later additionally micro worms or cyclops.
In the wild, the Sparkensalmler eats mainly animal food, although it is considered omnivorous. Also in the aquarium live or frozen Artemia, small mosquito larvae, small water fleas or copepods are a good food. Flake food or fine granulated food are also eaten with pleasure.
Our feed recommendation: This NatureHolic main feed is a professional staple feed for all aquarium fish. Main feed we supply in the form of soft granules, which thanks to its grain size of half a millimeter can be easily absorbed by small to medium-sized fish. The soft consistency resembles the texture of insect larvae in nature and protects the fish mouth from micro-injuries.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free from algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
