The Sumatran fern is also called filigree fern or fine-leaved horn fern because of its fine leaf structure. Scientifically, this tropical and subtropical water fern is called Ceratopteris thalictroides. In nature, it occurs in very shallow waters and grows partially emersed (making it suitable for above-water culture in a paludarium ). Sumatra fern also forms roots at the rosette-shaped origin of the leaves, but the plant can just as well be left to float freely.
In the aquarium this fast growing plant needs some space. Sumatra fern is robust and consumes many nutrients, which are therefore not available to algae. Especially in fresh aquariums, this is a very desirable feature.
On separated older leaves floating on the water surface Sumatra fern forms young plants, so the plant can be propagated very easily.
The fine leaves are ideal as spawning substrate or in shrimp tanks. The little crawlers love the fine structures, which givethem cover and a great grazing area.
Our recommendation: For a splendid plant growth we recommend the use of the NatureHolic fertilizer series and for new plants the Premium Nutrient Substrate NatureHolic GroundBooster.
