from over 3,000 reviews "With the Test Set II, nitrogen compounds in the aquarium can be detected easily and uncomplicatedly and also extremely precisely. Especially in a newly set up aquarium, these play a major role and determine the "harmlessness" of the same. Only when nitrite can no longer be detected should the tank be stocked with animals so that they can live in a safe environment and do not fall ill. But the water values should also be measured in between and especially in case of acute problems. This is the only way to detect and correct possible problems in time.
The test set measures the parameters ammonium/ammonia, phosphate and nitrate by means of a reliable drop test. The color chart provides information about the measurement results. In contrast to test strips, droplet tests are considered to be safer and more informative.
The drop test measures these values:
Ammonium/ Ammonia NH4:
Organic substances such as food and plant residues, but also fish excretions are broken down via the so-called nitrogen cycle in the aquarium and pond. Proteins are transformed into ammonium, which is transformed into nitrite and finally into nitrate. Certain bacteria are responsible for this. Only by measuring these individual intermediate stages can a reliable statement be made about the "functioning aquarium system".
PhosphatePO4:
In general, phosphate is an important plant nutrient and is mostly produced in the aquarium by the excretions of the fish, but also by food residues. However, too high phosphate levels lead to undesirable algae growth. This occurs mainly in heavily stocked waters. In the aquarium, the phosphate content should be below 0.4 mg/l, in the marine aquarium below 0.1 mg/l.
Nitrate NO3:
If there is a disturbance in the bacterial balance, ammonium and nitrite can accumulate. If only the nitrate content increases and at the same time the ammonium content is low or not detectable, this indicates a well functioning bacterial balance, but an insufficient balance between fish (as nitrogen source) and plants (consumers). Excessive nitrate levels promote algae formation and should therefore not exceed 30 mg/l in freshwater and 20 mg/l in seawater. In heavily planted aquariums or in aquascapes, however, nitrate may be in short supply and should be re-filled
