Anubias barteri var. barteri
Anubias barteri var. barteri is an undemanding plant from West Africa. It grows larger than Anubias barteri var. nana, but is grown under the same conditions. Anubias barteri is very variable in size and leaf shape, the plants can grow 25-45 cm tall and the rhizome quickly grows 10 cm long or more.Like other Anubias species, it is best planted in a shady spot to limit algae growth on the leaves. Suitable for terrariums and aquaterrariums. Herbivorous fish will not eat the very tough and robust leaves.
The popular and less demanding dwarf spear leaf Anubias barteri var. barteri is ideal for the foreground to middle ground with its slow growth and dark green leaves. Anubias grow best as perching plants tied up on roots or stones. Plant them in the ground and their rootstock may rot. Anubias nana even blooms under water from time to time.
The hard-leaved dwarf spear leaf can be used very well in a perch tank, the plant is spurned by most herbivorous fish. Anubias barteri var. nana also thrives in shady places or under low light.
Propagation is straightforward: cut off a piece of the thick rootstock and make sure there are two or more leaves on each piece - this way the offshoot will continue to grow without problems.
