The Asian Golden Ringed Goby (Brachygobius xanthozona) inhabits freshwater and brackish areas in streams. The beautifully marked, golden-yellow and black ringed fish grow only 3-5 cm long and are relatively peaceful. The males defend their territories against conspecifics, but not aggressively. Goldringel gobies should be kept in groups of 5 or more.
Goldringel gobies can be kept in soft to hard water in the aquarium, for reproduction the animals seem to prefer even soft water. From the temperature Brachygobius xanthozona needs rather warm water with 26-30 °C and a pH value of 7-8,5. In the aquarium Goldringelgrundeln need living caves and brood caves, best one chooses here caves from clay with only one entrance.
The socialization with shrimps of the genus Neocaridina or with Sulawesi shr imps works - possibly shrimp babies are eaten, but with these very well reproducing species this is hardly of importance. The small gobies should not be kept with crayfish, they would soon be eaten depending on the character of the crayfish.
Golden gobies eat all kinds of small frozen food or live food: mosquito larvae, artemia, daphnia, cyclops and so on. Flake food should not be given - these gobies are carnivores, the vegetable content in flake food is too high and would harm the beautiful fish.
In Brachygobius xanthozona, the females grow slightly larger and have slightly more belly than the males. After courtship and mating, during which the yellow stripes males turn intense golden yellow, the female lays up to 250 eggs in the breeding cavity. The male takes care of the brood care. The very small fry are initially raised with slipperfish and rotifers, later with Artemia nauplii.
