Freshwater mussels are great and very fascinating animals. They have a considerable appetite and clear the water of edible suspended matter to an amazing degree. Unfortunately, filtered water is usually too clean and no longer contains enough food for the mussels, and an algae bloom is also extremely rare in the aquarium. In order to provide freshwater mussels with everything they need nevertheless, a special mussel food is recommended, which gives the animals all the nutrients and minerals they need to build up their shells in a stable and healthy way and which provides energy for their elaborate way of feeding. Mussels constantly pump water through their special filtering apparatus, sifting fine to very fine suspended particles out of the water, which they clarify very efficiently in this way.
A fine dust food, specially adapted to the needs of the mussel, can literally prolong the life of these fascinating mollusks and save them from starvation in an aquarium that is too clean.
For targeted feeding of the mussel feed and the mussel vital feed we recommend the use of a pipette or a thick feeding tube. This tube is placed carefully over the freshwater mussel so that it does not close, and then the food is given specifically into this tube, or a dust food-water mixture is sprayed directly in the direction of the feeding opening of the mussel. Again, of course, be very careful not to startle it and cause its shell halves to collapse.
