Temperature equalization in the aquarium

It is not absolutely necessary to heat an aquarium with freshwater shrimp, depending on the species being kept. Many dwarf shrimps do not need such high temperatures as we are used to from many ornamental fish - 25 °C is even often too much. Especially the species from temperate zones and from the subtropics like Neocaridina (the well known and popular Red Fire shrimp belong to this species, as well as many others: Yellow Fire, Blue Dream, Blue Jelly, Blue Rili, Red Rili, Red Sakura, Orange Sakura, Green Jade and many, many more) and of course also Bee Shrimp (Caridina logemanni) and Tiger Shrimp (Caridina mariae) as well as Caridina cantonensis (Tangerine Tiger, Aura Blue, Spotted Shrimp) and Caridina serrata (Stardust Shrimp) you don't really need any heating if the temperatures in the aquariumdon' t drop below 16 °C.

The situation is different with shrimps from the tropics: Sulawesi shrimps or the Amazon leaf shrimp: They need high water temperatures, Amazonian leaf shrimp and other Macrobrachium species from tropical regions from 25 °C, Sulawesi shrimp from 27 °C upwards. Also babaulti shrimps from India and Nigerian floating shrimps like it a bit cozier, for them about 25 °C is recommended. Here you cannot avoid the use of a heater.

However, if you want to be sure that the heater does not "run away" and overheat the aquarium water, you should choose a conventional, not electronically controlled heater with the smallest possible dimensions. The reason for this is the bimetal switch that turns the heater on or off depending on the temperature. The more often the switch has to switch, the greater the risk that the metal strips will stick together and that the switch will not be able to turn the heater off - the dreaded "runaway". If the heater is too powerful for the aquarium, water temperatures beyond 45 °C are possible - deadly for any stock, including aquarium plants. An undersized heater will run virtually all the time anyway. Even if the metal strips in the switch should stick, nothing can happen this way.

However, here in Garnelio's online store you can buy not only heaters, but also coolers. Especially in our increasingly hot summers shrimp from cool mountain streams, such as the bee shrimp or tiger shrimp, but also some bumblebee shrimp do extremely difficult. In warm water, the bacterial load increases and the oxygen content decreases - both of which these shrimp do not like at all. Too high temperatures in the aquarium can lead to stress and even diseases and should therefore be avoided at all costs if you want to enjoy your aquarium stock for a long time. With a properly used cooler, you can cool the water temperature in the aquarium by up to 4 degrees. Cooling fans take advantage of the evaporative cooling that occurs when water evaporates. From time to time, you should replenish the evaporated aquarium water with distilled water or with osmosis water.
