The Pacman frog Ceratophrys cranwelli "Picachu Super" is based on the color of the popular Pokemon Pikachu. It is intense yellow with yellow markings that are only slightly separated. However, the Super Picachu Pacman Frog not only has an interesting color, but also has a funny, unusual body shape: Cranwell's Jewel Horn Frog from the South American rainforest has an impressively large mouth and two interesting horns made of skin flaps above the eyes.
Female Cranwell's Jewel Horn Frogs reach an impressive body length of up to 22 inches, while the males are also very impressive size-wise, but remain slightly smaller than the ladies.
As a very territorial l oner, the Super Picachu Pacman Frog does not tolerate any of its conspecifics in the terrarium. Smaller conspecifics are sometimes simply eaten without a second thought. Fights between frogs of about the same size usually do not end well for at least one of the two involved - the Super Picachu Horned Frog should therefore be kept individually in the terrarium. Also a socialization with other terrarium animals is not really advisable, because Cranwell's Jewel Horn Frog eats smaller reptiles and amphibians without further ado and because larger reptiles would perceive it as prey or at least stress it strongly.
The Super Picachu Pacman Frog is a quiet fellow that is quite content in a relatively small terrarium despite its size: 60 x 30 x 30 cm is sufficient for keeping a Pacman Frog in a terrarium. The chill Super Picachu Pacman Frogs sit as a lurking hunter or hunter of hiding the whole day partly buried and wait for prey.
The Super Picachu Pacman Frog does not swim and therefore only needs a shallow water dish as a bathing place. Because the Super Picachu Pacman Frog is not a herbivore, the terrarium can be planted rainforest style. The Super Picachu Jewel Horned Frog is very fond of taking roots and other shelters for shelter. In the terrarium for a Jewel Horned Frog, the substrate needs to be absorbent, rather loose, and high enough for the frog to burrow in - coco humus or leaf litter works well. The decorative horned frog does not necessarily need a terrarium heater at room temperature, the lighting in the rainforest terrarium for the Super Picachu Pacman Frog should basically match the requirements of the plants in it.
In the terrarium, the Super Picachu Pacman Frog needs a high humidity of 70-90%, a daytime temperature 22-28 °C and a night temperature of 20-22 degrees. In winter, the Super Picachu Jewel Horn Frog will hibernate at 15 °C with short-day lighting.
South American Jewel Horn Frogs in their natural rainforest habitats can eat even surprisingly large prey with their wide mouths. Adult pacman frogs prey on rats up to medium size! On the menu of the large-mouthed frogs are small vertebrates such as small mammals, amphibians and reptiles and, depending on the size of the frog, worms, ants, other crawling insects and more. In the terrarium, the voracious Super Picachu Jewel Horn Frog will take frozen food or live food appropriate to its size, even from tweezers after habituation. Pacman frogs often have quite different food preferences in the terrarium. What exactly the frog likes to eat, you just have to try. Suitable for feeding the Super Picachu Pacman Frog in the terrarium are crickets, grasshoppers or cockroaches, more rarely earthworms or other worms, small frost mice or sometimes thawed smelts. It makes sense to enhance the food animals for the Super Picachu Pacman Frog with lime powder and a vitamin preparation.
A small Super Picachu Pacman Frog up to about the size of a 2 Euro piece is fed every two days. As it grows, there will only be something every 3-4 days. Attention, jewel horn frogs can bite. Especially the teeth of the bigger frogs can be felt!
Super Picachu Pacman frogs are not easy to breed. The partners must match in size, otherwise the cannibalistic female may simply eat the smaller male. Jewel horn frogs need to be brought into mating mood by seasonally simulating a cooler dry season with 15 °C and short day lighting. Some specimens may need additional hormone treatment to even get in the mating mood. After the cool, dry winter dormancy, the rainy season is simulated to initiate the mating season: For this purpose, the temperature in the terrarium is turned up again, the lighting is changed to a long day and the terrarium is moistened again more strongly. The frogs are also well fed with high quality food to condition them. If mating and egg-laying are successful, the highly cannibalistic tadpoles must be raised accordingly.
