Golden redhead tetra - Hemigrammus bleheri
The golden variant of Bleher's Redhead Tetra (Hemigrammus bleheri "Gold") is characterized by its golden transparent coloration. The red colored head shows partly only fragments of this red coloration, the eye is reddish. The transversely black and white striped caudal fin of the tetra is rather weakly colored in the golden variant. Like the natural form, the golden redhead tetra grows to a length of 3.5 to 5 cm. The females appear somewhat more plump than the rather slender males.
The golden variant of Bleher's Redhead Tetra (Hemigrammus bleheri "Gold") is also swimming and agile. Bleher's redhead tetra originates from South America; the golden variant is a breeding form.
Bleher's Redhead Tetra "Gold" is a cool schooling fish, which you should keep in a larger group from 10 animals and more. You can mix the wild form and the golden color form. In single keeping or in a too small group this great aquarium fish does not feel well and is then quite shy. The redhead tetra is one of the few true schooling fish in aquaristics.
The golden redhead tetra can be easily socialized with other peaceful, not disproportionately large fish in the aquarium. Like its wild-colored brother, the golden redhead tetra is also a wonderful fish for a community aquarium. Small shrimp offspring may be eaten under certain circumstances - but with species that reproduce well (such as with Neocaridina or Sulawesi domestic shrimp) Bleher's golden redhead tetra can be socialized quite well. Also with the much larger and more assertive Amano shrimps the socialization of Hemigrammus bleheri "gold" works well. Even a socialization with peaceful dwarf shrimps is conceivable, because the golden red-headed tetra lives strongly oriented at the surface.
The tetra Hemigrammus bleheri "Gold" should be kept in soft to medium hard aquarium water. The pH value should lie with approx. 6.0 to 7 in the rather acid range. The water temperature in the aquarium may be 25-28 °C for the tropical tetras. For successful keeping of Bleher's Redhead Tetra "gold" in the aquarium, the lowest possible nitrate value is important. Redhead tetras are quite sensitive to too much NO3 in the aquarium water.
The golden variety of Bleher's Red-headed Tetra is as eager to swim as the wild form. These tetras therefore need an aquarium with an edge length of at least 80 cm. You can plant the tank well along the edges , but you should also leave enough space for the tetras to swim.
If you want to breed Hemigrammus bleheri "Gold", soft, very clean water with a low pH value is even more important than for keeping the ornamental fish in the aquarium. In the breeding tank with the fry you should change water regularly, so that the water load remains low. The breeding aquarium can be well planted. Moss cushions provide the ideal spawning substrate for the free spawners, but large pebbles on the bottom are also possible, between which the spawning grains can fall, so that the predatory parent fish cannot get hold of the spawn. After spawning, remove the adult golden redhead tetras from the rearing tank. Feed the fry with artemia euplii and other fine live foods such as small microworms after they have swum free.
The Golden Blehers Redheaded Tetra, like the wild Hemigrammus bleheri, is an omnivore and thus very uncomplicated to feed. A good flake food is accepted by the tetra as well as live food, freeze-dried food or even frozen food.
Our food recommendation: The NatureHolic Main Feed is a professional staple food for all aquarium fish. We supply Hauptfeed in the form of soft granules, which, thanks to its grain size of half a millimeter, can be easily absorbed by small to medium-sized fish. The soft consistency resembles the texture of insect larvae in nature and protects the fish mouth from micro-injuries.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend when keeping fish the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
