Angelfish gold XL - Pterophyllum scalare

Golden angelfish are a real feast for the eyes in the aquarium and are a wonderful color variation of Pterophyllums scalare. As one of the first imported ornamental fish from South America, angelfish have been delighting for over a century and it is hard to imagine life without them. The wild form of the also sail fins or common angelfish called animals originally come from calmer river sections of the Rio Negro up to the Amazon basin. In the blackwater aquarium they are the fish of choice.

Angelfish have a typical round body with very flat sides, which has long and pointed "sail fins", which gave them their name. The terminal mouth is also striking. Due to their long fins, the total height of the animals appears more than twice as high as their body height. Thereby they reach almost 26 cm and a length of 15 cm. Therefore their keeping is only suitable in high aquariums from at least 60 cm, better more. With a possible age of almost 10 years the Golden Angelfish is a loyal family member to you. With about half a year they become sexually mature for the first time, about 2 years later they are fully grown.

Angelfish are not so easy to distinguish in sex. Therefore group keeping with several animals is advantageous. Harmonious pairs are formed from this, solaange the swarm swims more or less loosely together. Although the occasionally appearing "bull's forehead" of the males could be used as a sex characteristic, the females sometimes also develop this. Females signal their readiness to mate by cleaning spawning substrate. In doing so, she "cleans" flat stones on which she lays her eggs in long rows, which are inseminated by the male. Due to possible predators in the community aquarium, rearing is more suitable in a nursery aquarium. The male and also the female will defend the fry and the young fish.

Care your favorites best in groups of at least 5 animals in very high aquariums from 300 liters. Especially the height of the aquarium is more crucial than the length, because angelfish tend to stress and anxiety caused by too low aquariums, which can quickly make them sick. Cory catfish, Ancistrus and larger Tetras are excellently suited as by-fish in the angelfish aquarium. Small crustaceans and other invertebrates usually end up as intermediate snacks. Snails, however, usually remain largely unaffected.

Angelfish are sensitive carnivores, which you should feed with high quality food. Therefore a flake food or slowly sinking granulated food for carnivorous ornamental fish is suitable for his diet. Also its menu can be enriched with perfect live food or frozen food like Artemia, mosquito larvae, daphnia or water fleas to spice it up occasionally.
