What exactly is montmorillonite?

Montmorillonites occur very frequently in nature. They are minerals and consist of sodium aluminium silicates. In terms of structure, montmorillonite, or "monte" as it is often abbreviated, belongs to the so-called phyllosilicates. Due to its layered structure, the inner structure of montmorillonite provides highly porous framework-like interstices that form a micro-sieve. Here, other molecules (especially cations) of other substances can be physically trapped.

Due to its stable mineral structure, montmorillonite is not very susceptible to decomposition by bacteria or UV light - unlike chemical water conditioners, it is hardly affected by this.

By the way, montmorillonite gets its somewhat complicated-to-pronounce name from the place where it was first discovered. Montmorillon is a small town in France. However, the mineral is found practically all over the world - and it has even been detected in rock samples from the planet Mars.

What can Montmorillonite do in the aquarium as a water conditioner?

As a phyllosilicate, montmorillonite acts as a cation exchanger in water due to its porous structure. This means that in its microfine net-like structures, montmorillonite firmly physically binds various substances and pollutants such as ammonia, but also heavy metals and the like. A physical bond is often much more stable than a chemical one, because it cannot be broken again by UV radiation or bacterial activity. This makes Montmorillonite an effective water conditioner for the aquarium.

The best way to handle montmorillonite in the aquarium

Even with physically working water conditioners it is possible that substances are "pushed" out of the bond again - this is because there are substances to which the montmorillonite "prefers" to bind than to others. These substances - for example ammonium (NH4) can release other substances from the bond. Thus, in exceptional cases, undesirable molecules can get back into the water. This can be prevented by regularly mulching the bottom of the aquarium when Montmorillonite is used as a water conditioner. By mulching, the montmorillonite particles deposited in the bottom can be elegantly removed from the aquarium together with the bound pollutants. Because the filter also traps the montmorillonite particles, the filter materials should also be rinsed out from time to time in order to actively remove the pollutants bound to the montmorillonite from the aquarium.

Montmorillonite settles relatively quickly on the bottom, so you can take advantage of this and simply add NatureHolic PurMontmorillonite water conditioner to the changing water for the aquarium. After a short time, the powdered montmorillonite will settle to the bottom of the tank. The purified changing water is then naturally added to the aquarium without this sediment.

NatureHolic PurMontmorillonit - a water conditioner based on montmorillonite

Our water conditioner NatureHolic PurMontmorillonit for the aquarium is purely mineral and consists of 100% finely ground natural montmorillonite. Due to their extremely fine grain size, the tiny Monte particles have an enormously large surface area in relation to their volume and can therefore bind a particularly large number of pollutants of all kinds in the aquarium water.

When NatureHolic PurMontmorillonit is added, the water in the aquarium initially becomes slightly milky to cloudy. This is completely normal, the turbidity is caused by the powdered, finely dispersed montmorillonite. Montmorillonite settles quite quickly on the bottom or the powder is caught and retained by the filter. Therefore it does not take long until the aquarium water is crystal clear and transparent again after the application of PurMontmorillonit.

Dosage of NatureHolic PurMontmorillonit water conditioner

For use in the aquarium or as a water conditioner for changing water, add 0.05-0.1 g (half a measuring spoon or simply a small pinch) of PurMontmorillonit per 10 litres of water. When used in the aquarium, the fine powder is sprinkled well distributed on the water surface. The filter current then does the rest and ensures that the powder is evenly distributed in the water. In the changing water tank, simply stir briefly after sprinkling so that the powdered montmorillonite water conditioner is well distributed.
