The freshwater dolphin is a species of fish found in West Africa in rivers, streams and lakes, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The species is also known as the Eastern bottlehead myrid, Eastern bottlehead, elephant trunk, and "baby dolphin" by aquarists.
It owes its name to its similar appearance to a bottle-nosed dolphin, with a gray, smooth body and an elongated snout. The freshwater dolphinfish uses small electrical pulses to find food and defend itself. It is often confused with other species and subspecies, such as the Mormyrus Rume, Mormyrus Kannume, and Mormyrus Caschive, because they are almost indistinguishable when young, making identification difficult.
The freshwater dolphin is known for its intelligence, curiosity, and outgoing nature. Keepers report that the fish plays with toys and learns tricks. Because of its electrical impulses, it can give a mild electric shock when caught. The freshwater dolphin is a carnivore and lays eggs. It reaches a maximum size of about 25 cm and the sex is undetermined. The pH range should be between 6.5 and 7.5 and the water temperature between 26°C and 28°C.
