from over 3,000 reviews "The golden roach is the reddish color form of the roach, also called roach(Rutilus rutilus). The fish looks quite similar to the golden roach, but has red eyes, not brown-yellow ones. The fins are also reddish. Adult goldplugs grow to an average length of 20-30 cm, in exceptional cases the pond fish can even reach a body length of up to 50 cm. As carp fish, gold roaches are gregarious schooling fish. Our gold roaches are 10-15 cm long.
The roach is a pond fish native to Europe, so it can easily overwinter in a garden pond at least 1 to 1.30 m deep. The fish will sink to the bottom and fall into cold torpor there. A good oxygen supply is also important in winter - therefore the surface of the pond must not freeze completely. An ice freezer or pond thermostat can help with this.
The golden roach is a quite undemanding fish, only it does not like a too strong current. A good pond planting also at the pond edge helps to remove pollutants. A pond filter is only necessary in heavily stocked ponds. For a better oxygen supply in summer, an oxydator for garden ponds, a water feature or an air pump are useful. We recommend a pond volume of at least 1000 liters per fishfor a shoal of goldfish.
As sociable schooling fish, roaches need the company of a group of at least 5-10 conspecifics. The color forms can be mixed without hesitation. Roaches are good by-fish for a large koi pond. A well planted pond with a shallow water zone, ideally in partial shade, is optimal for keeping gold roaches. A muddy bottom is interesting for the fish because they like to dig for food there.
They like tospawn in a heavily weeded shallow water zone. Also in the garden pond the breeding of the Goldplötze is possible. When spawning, the roaches are very active, splashing and spraying a lot during their lively mating games. The females stick up to 1 million tiny eggs to plant stems, on rocks or similar substrates. Goldplugs are also extremely prolific pond dwellers in the garden pond.
As omnivores, golden roaches also like to eat vegetable food in addition to mosquito larvae (including the larvae of mosquitoes), small crustaceans, snails, worms and the like. They like to eat algae and annoying duckweed, but they also nibble on pond plants with soft foliage from time to time. Water lilies are usually spared. If the pond is well planted and sufficiently large, there is usually no need to feed the golden roaches. If you would like to feed them, the beautiful pond fish will gladly eat a high-quality goldfish food.
Length: 10-15 cm
Our food recommendation: The professional Pond Time Goldfish Food is a complete feed for goldfish and pond fish, which due to its high quality composition allows fast growth without simultaneous fattening of the animals. Due to its buoyancy and composition, it can be optimally absorbed and digested by the fish, which prevents algae plagues in the garden pond and keeps the germ load of the water low.
