Description

The velvet scarecrow, also known as the Peruvian peppered scarecrow or red-winged scarecrow, is an impressive and beautiful species native to Peru. It is interesting to know that these insects are only found in an area of 5 hectares, which makes them an endangered species. Although they are relatively easy to breed, the population has not been able to expand further in the wild. However, breeding strains are released into the wild to protect the species.

The velvet scarecrow has a perfectly developed eye that can perceive its environment similar to the human eye. Females are larger than males, measuring 65-70mm, while males are only 40-50mm. The shrike is jet black in color and has a velvety surface. Although it used to be able to fly well, its wings have regressed during evolution and are called stubby wings. It is unclear if these wings are also used for courtship or communication.

The velvet scarecrow is a forager and eats lilacs, forsythia, and various privet species. Only privet leaves are used for winter feeding. It is important to note that privet hedges should not be planted near roads, as exhaust fumes and salt are harmful to these plants in winter. Rose petals, unfortunately, are not accepted by this shrike.

The velvet scarecrow is most comfortable at a temperature of 25 degrees and should be sprayed about 3 times a week, but not directly on them. When exposed to high stress or pain, the velvet scare may spray a black liquid that smells like oil and causes a burning sensation on mucous membranes, hence the name peppered scare. This defense makes it very unattractive to predators. However, it is unlikely that this defensive reaction will be triggered in the terrarium unless the peppered cricket is accidentally trapped or stressed.
