The Sulawesi Inland Shrimp is also known as Malawa Shrimp. This only 1.5 cm small shrimp is particularly lively and swim joyfully, one could watch it constantly. It is transparent and in the species tank also relatively unspectacular transparent, possibly with a small black stripe pattern. Quite different in company of potential predators - there many Sulawesi inland shrimp show a very pretty narrow black and white banding, but there are also completely black, brown, bluish or gray animals. The females are beefier and also grow slightly larger than the males.
As far as water values are concerned, the Sulawesi Inland Shrimp is extremely adaptable. It does very well in very soft, medium hard, hard, and even brackish water with a low salinity, and reproduces in virtually all conditions. It should not be kept in very small nanocubes due to its very good reproduction rate, as these tanks quickly become too crowded.
Also to the food the Sulawesi shrimp has no high demands, it likes to eat algae and other micro deposits, but also fish food remains or special shrimp food it accepts gladly. Protein should be given twice a week in the form of a suitable protein food . Brown autumn leaves are also readily grazed and also eaten if they are friable enough.
The Sulawesi shrimp is famous for its excellent reproduction. Every three to four weeks the female releases up to 30 young and usually becomes pregnant again immediately. Due to their extreme robustness there are almost no failures of the young.
Due to its high reproduction rate, its very well developed escape reflex and its robustness with regard to water values, the Sulawesi Inland Shrimp is excellently suited for aquariums with fish. If the co-inhabitants are too large and too intrusive, the Sulawesi Inland Shrimp will live very hidden and will not reproduce quite as much. While it does not interbreed with any other shrimp species kept in the hobby, it should still not be socialized with shrimp that you want to breed in freshwater. It poses exceptionally strong food competition for alien juveniles, causing serious problems even for Neocaridina, which actually also reproduce very well.
