Checkered cichlid - Dicrossus maculatus
It originates from the South American Amazon and is one of the prettiest dwarf cichlids we know. The maculatus reaches a size of c.a 10 cm. As with many fish species, here the male is more intense in its coloration and prettier. The female is gray with their namesake black checkerboard pattern. They like to eat mulm, leaves and small debris, so they are also common in marshes and densely planted areas . During spawning season, the anus and ventral fins of females turn orange. Due to their behavior we recommend a tank size of c.a 120 cm edge length. Checkered Chichlid loves live food, frozen food or also normal fish food in flake form. We recommend to decorate the aquarium with sufficient hiding places like roots and hardscape, furthermore we recommend the addition of foliage and branches to create a naturalistic environment. Retreat possibilities are a very important factor in a chichlid tank, because they form territories. The female lays c.a 150 - 200 eggs, after about 3-5 days the small Chichlids hatch already another 3-5 days later the young animals already go on prey.
The water temperature should be between 25 and 30 degrees, the water values (pH) between 5.5 and 7.
