Description

The splendor featherbeard catfish (Synodontis decorus) from the Congo Basin in Africa likes to hide under roots and stones, but mainly at night it likes to go on tour in the aquarium. Splendorous featherbeard catfishes have a reddish-beige to silver-brown basic color and several slightly washed out dark points, which are distributed on the body and broaden on the fins to dark stripes. On the mouth of the Pracht Fiederbartwelse are the typical large, clearly visible three pairs of barbels, which all Fiederbartwelse have.

This pretty dark-spotted Featherbeard Catfish is perfect company for large tetras and American cichlids, large specimens also fit in aquariums with African cichlids. The robust aquarium companion should rather not be socialized with small fish, and small crustaceans such as dwarf shrimp or dwarf crayfish will become food. Large crayfish and crabs, on the other hand, could inflict serious injury on the scaleless Magnificent Pinniped Catfish.

The Magnificent Featherbeard Catfish grows to a size of about 25 cm and therefore wants to be kept in a correspondingly large aquarium of at least 200 liters. His home should be very well structured with root wood, stones and Catfish burrows suitable size should be structured very well, so that the catfish do not get on each other's nerves and can hide. The aquarium can be planted because Synodontis decorus does not gnaw on plants. However, algae coverings are rasped off.

The splendor featherbeard catfish Synodontis decorus has not yet been bred in the aquarium hobby. The sexes can be distinguished by the genital papilla, but otherwise the animals look virtually the same.

This beautiful, rather nocturnal catfish has a very interesting social behavior. Keeping them alone or in pairs is definitely not appropriate for the species and can lead to strong aggression against other aquarium mates. Featherbeard Catfish need a group in which they can live out their very special social behavior. The smallest group size is at least 5 specimens, so that the rank fights can be distributed among several conspecifics.

In nature, the splendor featherbeard catfish feeds on small crustaceans, insects and insect larvae, worms, and algae. In the aquarium, Synodontis decorus can be perfectly fed with food tablets for bottom-dwelling catfish and with other food for omnivorous fish, as well as with some soft vegetables. Sinking Live food and Frozen food suitable size are also very gladly accepted.

The water in the aquarium should be soft to medium hard for Pracht Fiederbartwelse, the temperature should be between 22 and 28 degrees.

Our food recommendation: The NatureHolic Catfish Feed is a professionally formulated complete food especially for all sucking catfish. The food tabs contain important dietary fibers such as chitin and plant fibers, which are essential for the survival of catfish for a well-functioning digestion. With strong proteins from insect larvae as well as carbohydrate-rich vegetables NatureHolic Catfish Feed provides all sucking catfish optimally with all important building materials for a fast and healthy growth. The extra hard chips can be scraped off by the catfish close to nature - here they really have to do something for their food! An occupation like in nature.

Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planaria and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.

Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
