The colorful brain coral Goniastrea sp. is a large polyp stony coral or LPS coral. It owes its name to its special shape and structure. Here you buy a mix of this beautifully structured and colored stony coral, with surprising and intense colors. This great LPS coral originally comes from the Indo-Pacific.
Goniastrea stony corals, like all LPS corals, are very good to keep in a saltwater reef aquarium, much better than the more demanding small polyp SPS corals. Large polyp stony corals are great for people who are starting to keep corals in a reef aquarium. However, they are also great for more advanced keepers because the attractive stony corals just really offer a lot visually.
The beautifully textured and colored brain coral Goniastrea sp. shows its colors depending on the light intensity and on the availability of nutrients and trace elements, so its appearance in the aquarium can vary quite a bit.
Brain coral Goniastrea sp. fits well in a marine reef aquarium from about 150 liters. When placing it, note that its tentacles are unusually long - it needs some distance from other corals so that it does not entangle them. Goniastrea sp. prefers medium light and a place rather bottom to center in the reef. The large polyp brain coral Goniastrea sp. should not be placed in strong current, a medium current is sufficient.
Goniastrea sp. benefits very much from feeding with plant and animal plankton in the reef aquarium, although feeding is not mandatory.
You can propagate this brain coral well by cutting off an offshoot. The coral fragment you glue with a suitable coral glue on a small stone or directly on your reef.
