The offered fish in the size of 4,5-6,0 cm is a loricariid catfish of the species Hypancistrus furunculus, also known as L199 Orinoco Zebra Catfish. This species originates from the Río Orinoco and Río Ventuarí rivers and can grow up to 14-15 cm. The Loricariidae family, to which this species belongs, includes more than 750 species with a variety of colors and shapes. Loricariid catfish are known for their strong armor and disc-shaped mouth, which they use to suck in. Some species are popular as algae eaters, including the L199 Orinoco Zebra Catfish.
Keeping loricariid catfish requires some thought, as species can vary greatly in size. The L199 Orinoco Zebra Catfish is a medium-sized species and requires an oxygen-rich aquarium with a water temperature of 25-29°C and water that is not too hard to thrive. Breeding is quite possible if suitable spawning burrows are offered. It is important to find out about the maximum size of loricariid catfish before purchasing, as some species can grow up to 60 cm in length.
For most Hypancistrus and Peckoltia species, aquariums with a volume of 200 liters or more are recommended, while the smaller species such as Otocinclus can be kept in aquariums as small as 54 liters. Hiding places such as rocks and wood are important to provide a retreat for the animals, while aquarium plants are not essential. Heavy aeration of the water is also recommended.
Loricariids are peaceful fish but can be territorial towards conspecifics, especially the larger species. It is important to carefully consider the possibilities of socialization with other fish, as some species are herbivores and are not suitable for planted aquariums.
Overall, the L199 Orinoco Zebra Catfish is a beautiful and interesting species that can be an asset to any suitable aquarium. However, it is important to learn about the needs and requirements of the species before purchasing to ensure it can be kept appropriately.
Our food recommendation: The NatureHolic Main Feed is a professional staple feed for all aquarium fish. We supply Hauptfeed in the form of soft granules, which, thanks to its grain size of half a millimeter, can be easily ingested by small to medium-sized fish. The soft consistency resembles the texture of insect larvae in nature and protects the fish mouth from micro-injuries.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend when keeping fish the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
