The black and white striped, incredibly attractive zebra catfish (Hypancistrus zebra) L46 is extremely popular in aquaristics, it is certainly one of the most beautiful L-catfish from South America. The contrast-rich drawn animals become up to 11 cm long and should be held in a group of 5-10 conspecifics. In its home, the Rio Xingu (Brazil), the L46 is threatened by extinction due to a dam project. In the meantime the zebra loricariid has been banned for export, so the animals offered here are aquarium offspring.
The sex differentiation is relatively difficult with the Zebra Loricarius, but not impossible. The females are more plump, in the males the pectoral fins are covered with clearly visible bristles at the front edge. In addition, the hooked spines of the gill cover, which are extended in case of danger, are more pronounced in the males. These beautiful catfish live up to 15 years.
Breeding the L46 is a bit more involved, but possible in the aquarium. As a prerequisite for successful breeding, this loricariid catfish, being a cave breeder, needs a large number of caves. The water temperature should be increased to 29 °C. The male guards the clutch, which is laid in the cave after mating, and cares for the fry. The fry are raised on frozen food and catfish food. They grow quite slowly.
The L46 needs soft to medium hard water with a GH up to 15 and a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. Water temperatures should be between 25 and 30 °C. Since the Zebra Loricarius does not go to plants, it can be placed well in planted aquariums. Together with other fishes the catfishes are less shy, and also with shrimps you can socialize Hypancistrus zebra very well. Snails are eaten, shrimp babies can possibly be eaten as well. Also from the water temperatures the zebra catfish fits better to Neocaridina or to Amano shrimps.
The omnivorous Hypancistrus zebra tends to eat animal food, but supplements it with plant matter such as algae or foliage. In the aquarium it likes to eat frozen food or catfish tablets. It also occasionally rasps off algae coverings and sucks out snails. Roots are very desirable as a source of dietary fiber, and catfish will also go for brown autumn leaves from time to time.
Our food recommendation: The NatureHolic Catfish Feed for all aufwuchs feeding sucking catfish in the aquarium is a balanced tablet food that does not cloud the water and the fish like to eat. The catfish tablets also contain NatureHolic active ingredient complexes, which provide the sucking catfish with everything they need for a strong immune system, healthy growth and great, contrasting coloration. As a snack, supplementary food or vacation food we recommend the CatfishPlates.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
