The yellow-banded featherbeard catfish (Synodontis flavitaeniatus) is also called red-striped featherbeard catfish. It originates from the Congo and Angola in Africa. The colloquial names already reveal a lot about its coloration: on a chocolate brown background, yellow, orange-red or red longitudinal stripes cover the body of this featherbeard catfish, which extend into the caudal fin. The belly is brightly colored. The fins are light to transparent and dark striped. At the mouth are at the yellow-banded featherbeard catfish like at all Synodondits the three pairs of big, very well visible barbels .
This strikingly striped Bearded Catfish is ideally suited for socialization with African Tetras and Carps of appropriate size, for example with a group of Congo Tetras. Socialization can also work very well with other small to medium and large tetras, carp fish and American cichlids if water requirements match. Not to African cichlids and large predatory fish. Socialization does not work with small crayfish and dwarf shrimp, they become food. Large crayfish and crabs, on the other hand, inhabit the same water zones and can harm the scaleless Redbanded Featherbeard Catfish.
The yellow-striped featherbeard catfish reaches a total length of slightly less than 20 cm. An aquarium of 100 liters or more is ideal for a group of about 5 specimens. The relatively shy fish needs the company of conspecifics. It is much more peaceful than the rest of the Synodontis in the hobby, but shows itself much more often when it has aquarium mates of the same kind.
Synodontis flavitaeniatus likes a soft substrate and likes to hide between roots and under stones. Catfish burrows are also readily accepted. The home of the Red Stripe Pinniped Catfish is therefore well structured with root wood, stones and appropriately large Catfish burrows well structured. Although these Synodontis are also quite compatible with each other , they are very grateful for hiding places so that they can avoid each other and hide in case of doubt. Synodontis flavitaeniatus does not eat plants, but rasps off algae coverings. The aquarium can therefore be planted appropriately.
The Yellow Banded Featherback Catfish Synodontis flavitaeniatus has not been bred to date. It is believed to be a free spawner. In the wild, the fish migrate to floodplains where they mate and spawn. Sex differentiation is difficult. There are no breeding reports to date.
In the wild, the omnivorous Yellowbanded Featherbeard Catfish feeds on insect larvae and worms, small crustaceans, and algae. In the aquarium, Synodontis flavitaeniatus is best fed with food tablets specifically for omnivorous bottom-dwelling catfish and some soft vegetables. Also sinking live food and frozen food of appropriate size take the beautiful featherbeard catfish also very gladly.
The aquarium water should be rather soft to medium hard for a group of Yellow Banded Featherbeard Catfish, this Synodontis species does not react well to incorrect water values. The temperature should be between 22 and 28 degrees. The water should be clean and rich in oxygen for the Red Banded Bearded Catfish.
Our food recommendation: NatureHolic Catfish Feed consists of sinking tablets with a good proportion of animal as well as vegetable food. The complexes of active ingredients ensure that the catfish adopt a healthy immune system, good growth and beautiful colors.
Our feed recommendation: The NatureHolic Catfish Feed is a professionally formulated complete food especially for all sucking catfish. The food tabs contain important dietary fibers such as chitin and plant fibers, which are essential for the survival of catfish for a well-functioning digestion. With strong proteins from insect larvae as well as carbohydrate-rich vegetables NatureHolic Catfish Feed provides all sucking catfish optimally with all important building materials for a fast and healthy growth. The extra hard chips can be scraped off by the catfish close to nature - here they really have to do something for their food! An occupation like in nature.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
