The great Nannostomus unifasciatus, as it is also called scientifically, is an extremely interesting and above all eye-catching fish, which is also called Einbinden-Ziersalmler or Schrägsteher. This is because it is this way of swimming that makes it so special, so that it lives up to its name. It originates from the estuary of the Rio Negro.
The Slanting Tetra, which belongs to the tetras, has an elongated body with a silver to gray ground color. A black band extends from the mouth to the forked caudal fin. The dorsal part is golden yellow, while the belly is white. You can distinguish the sexes with regard to their anal fin, because it is somewhat larger in the males, in the females rather smaller and more triangular.
Offer your favorites an aquarium from 60 cm with soft, respectively acidic water. Because they like to stay at the water surface you should make it a bit more shady, you can darken the lighting a bit, but also use floating plants to make them feel comfortable. Depending on their well-being they may even color parts of the caudal fin in some places.
Even though they are very peaceful, it is best to keep them in a species tank with their own kind in a group or only socialize them with very calm other peaceful fish. Since they only have very small snouts, shrimp, snails and mussels are also well suited. However, you should better avoid crayfish, because they could catch and injure your darlings.
As omnivores you can offer them very small dry food or freshly hatched Artemia nauplii. Because they have small mouths, you can also use food for mini fish. Pay attention to a species-appropriate and varied diet. They will also take crushed flake food from the water surface, and you can spoil them with very small live food.
Our food recommendation: NatureHolic professional main feed is a professional main feed for all aquarium fish. We supply Hauptfeed in the form of soft granules, which, thanks to its grain size of half a millimeter, can be easily ingested by small to medium-sized fish. The soft consistency resembles the texture of insect larvae in nature and protects the fish mouth from micro-injuries.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend when keeping fish the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
