The Blue Neon (Paracheirodon simulans) belongs like all Tetras to the group of tetras. Paracheirodon simulans comes from tropical South America, from rivers with humic and soft water.
This schooling fish, widely used in aquaristics, reaches a length of 3 to 3.5 cm. The strong blue longitudinal stripe along the middle of the body gives it its name. The body color is silvery, the abdomen is adorned by a short red stripe running parallel to the blue stripe.
Females grow slightly larger and are a bit sturdier than males, but the sexes in the Blue Neon are relatively difficult to tell apart. Since Paracheirodon simulans is a schooling fish, it should be kept in groups of 10 or more. If the conditions are good, these ornamental fish can live up to 5 years in the aquarium.
Breeding Blue Neon in the aquarium is considered difficult, it does not often succeed. The animals need a dark aquarium and very soft, slightly acidified water (pH of about 5) and a water temperature of about 25 °C. The fish larvae must be raised separately, because they would be eaten by the adults. The young fish can be fed with artemia euplii.
The Blue Neon can be kept in densely planted aquariums, which should nevertheless offer plenty of swimming space. Paracheirodon simulans does not like much light, Floating plants are therefore a good addition. The water should be soft to maximum medium hard, the temperature of the water should be about 25-28 °C.
As a typical omnivore and predatory fish, the Blue Neon needs animal food such as frozen food, freeze-dried FD food or fine live food in addition to the usual fish food for omnivorous aquarium fish.
The Blue Neon is a quite peaceful small tetra and can be kept together with dwarf shrimps, although it may eat young shrimps. Optimal are well reproducing species like Neocaridina davidi, Neocaridina palmata or the Sulawesi shr imp.
Our food recommendation: The NatureHolic main feed is a professional staple feed for all aquarium fish. Main feed we supply in the form of soft granules, which thanks to its grain size of half a millimeter can be easily absorbed by small to medium-sized fish. The soft consistency resembles the texture of insect larvae in nature and protects the fish mouth from micro-injuries.
Our plant recommendation: For planting, use NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planaria and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
