Super Crystal Red - various breeding groups

The Super Crystal Red shrimp is a breeding form of the bee shrimp Caridina logemanni, here bred in the usual outstanding quality by Skyfish from Taiwan. The SCR, as it is abbreviated, is characterized by the fact that it is almost completely red and has only small white markings on the head and possibly on the abdomen. The tail fan is also adorned with a white stripe. Grade S denotes animals with a good color quality, in which only a few transparent spots are present. In the even higher grade SS these transparent areas are reduced to a minimum.

For a long time the bee shrimp was not recognized as a separate species, but was listed as Caridina cf. cantonensis. However, in December 2014, the first scientific description appeared, and since then it has been known as Caridina logemanni. Bee shrimp originally come from very clean, oxygenated small streams with cool water. They are native to southern China/Hong Kong. However, the Super Crystal Red is no longer the natural form, but a cultivated form. It can definitely be called a further development of the Crystal Red. The Crystal Red shrimp was selected by the Japanese Hisayasu Suzuki from wild colored bee shrimp and bred specifically. The breeder Leon Su aka Skyfish has perfectedthis strain of Skyfish Super Crystal Red shrimp and has consistently bred them to very high quality.

Like the wild form, the Skyfish Super Crystal Red shrimp prefers cool, clean and soft water in the aquarium. Keeping in tap water can only be recommended in very few cases, usually tap water is too hard. As a soft water shrimp the Skyfish Super Crystal Red wants a KH (carbonate hardness) as low as possible and a pH value in the slightly acidic range. We keep them in our Garnelio system at a conductance of 250 microsiemens and a pH slightly below 7 on active soil.

Ideally you keep the Skyfish Super Crystal Red also at your home in an aquarium with active Soil, which is not pre-fertilized and therefore suitable for shrimp keeping. In combination with osmosis water or demineralized water and hardening salt especially for bee shr imp, this is almost a perfect setup for this beautiful bee shrimp variety. If you choose an aquarium gravel as substrate instead of Soil, you should make sure besides a dark color that the gravel does not release any hardness builders to the water, but is water neutral.

The Skyfish Super Crystal Red needs like all bee shrimps clean, germ-poor water. For this reason, a weekly water change of 10 to 30% has proven successful. At water temperatures of 20 to maximum 25 °C the animals feel well. If the temperature rises above this, especially in summer, the aquarium should be cooled down with a suitable aquarium cooler. This keeps the oxygen content of the water high and the germ density low, which has a direct positive effect on the health of the shrimp.

Under good conditions in the aquarium, the Skyfish Super Crystal Red reproduces well. The females mate with the males and then nurse the eggs under the abdomen for three to five weeks. After that, they release 20 to 40 baby shrimp, which are still quite site-faithful at first.

Skyfish Super Crystal Red shrimp are typical omnivores, but should be fed a primarily plant-based diet. They are very fond of nibbling growth from surfaces in the aquarium. Brown autumn leaves are a good permanent food, and they won't say no to small amounts of scalded nettle or spinach, or even green dried walnut leaves. As a supplement and source of protein, artemia euplii or of course a protein food specially adapted to the needs of bee shrimp twice a week is a good choice.

The Skyfish Super Crystal Red shrimp grow to a maximum size of 3 centimeters, with about 2 cm the slimmer males remain a little smaller. The females can be recognized by their physique: they are clearly rounder than the males and their second abdominal segment is often enlarged.

Like all variants of Caridina logemanni the Skyfish Super Crystal Red are peaceful dwarf shrimps, which can be socialized well with peaceful fish and also with other shrimps, which have the same requirements to the water values. In case of doubt you should always choose a species tank! Also with peaceful snails you can keep the Skyfish Super Crystal Red well together.
