The cherry leaf from Asia has the botanical name Hygrophila corymbosa "Siamensis" and belongs to the water friends. The stem plant for the middle ground and the background in the aquarium or aquascape is also known as Thai giant water friend. The cherry leaf is a very frugal and robust aquarium plant that is very easy to care for and shows itself to be very adaptable in very different conditions. The large and broad leaves shaped like a cherry leaf with their light green color look absolutely perfect in the aquarium, especially in combination with fine-feathered plants.
The cherry leaf grows quickly and thus counteracts nutrient peaks in the aquarium water. Thus, the Thai Giant Water Lily deprives the algae in the aquarium of their food basis and can thus help prevent algae plagues.
Hygrophila corymbosa "Siamensis" must be regularly cut into shape to keep the stem plant nice and bushy. The cut shoots can be used for propagation as head cuttings: They are stuck a bit into the substrate and quickly sprout roots. After pruning, the stems of the cherry leaf sprout at the cut and become a beautiful bushy group of plants with compact growth.
Cherry leaf looks especially nice in a planted aquascape or planted aquarium when the bushes are pruned in a stepped rise, this gives perspective and you can see the beautiful leaf structures better. Such groups of plants can also be optimally rejuvenated by a spirited pruning and replanting of the cut shoots.
Without pruning, Thai Giant Water Lily has a tendency to grow out of the water. Especially in open aquariums this is a very nice effect. In this way, the cherry leaf can even come into bloom.
In a large Wabi Kusa, an appropriately sized paludarium or aquaterrarium, the cherry leaf can also be used beautifully in its overwater form.
