The Gold Orange Cardinalfish, Tanichthys albonubes, is a wonderful color form of the Cardinalfish that originated in southern China where it inhabits clear and weakly flowing to stagnant weedy waters and streams. It is assigned to the group of the bear fishes. Its scientific species name is explained as follows: Albonus refers to the Latin albus for white and nubes for cloud, thus declaring the former habitat of White Cloud Mountain.
Because the Golden Orange Cardinalfish can be maintained in a garden pond during the summer, it enjoys great popularity in aquariums. It is also very easy and uncomplicated to keep, as it can be kept at room temperature. The Gold-Orange Cardinalfish is golden-orange in base coloration, the dorsal, caudal and anal fins are red and may be yellow in contrast. The dorsal and anal fins are set well back and start at the same height. Especially in a species aquarium, the gold-orange cardinalfishes color more intensely. The males, which become territorial in places during the mating season, defend their territory without harming other fellow fish.
Due to their more intense colors and slimmer build, the males are easily distinguished from the females. The latter become somewhat plumper and rounder, especially at mating time. The cardinalfish can be motivated to mate with a targeted lowering and raising of temperature, as well as more intensive live feeding. The very interesting courtship dance is expressed by circling the female, with the male repeatedly putting up all fins. As free spawners they lay their eggs aimlessly in the aquarium, therefore a rearing aqu arium of 20 liters or more stocked with java moss as spawning substrate is suitable for targeted breeding. The larvae hatch after about 2 days and should be well fed with infusoria and freshly hatched Artemia nauplii. Very good water hygiene should be ensured. As soon as the fry are big enough, they can be put back to their parents without hesitation.
As a schooling fish the Gold-Orange Cardinalfish has a more or less fixed social structure, which it lives out within the species. We therefore recommend keeping it with at least 12 or more animals. Its aquarium should be at least 60 liters and may have a light-colored and coarse-grained substrate. With roots and stone superstructures territorial markings, but also a visual protection can be created. A dense planting in places serves as a retreat for the sometimes strongly courted females and lower-ranking animals. The water can have a total hardness (GH) between 4-30 ° dGH, a pH between 6-7.5 and rather cool temperatures of 17 to 22 °C. At permanently higher temperatures above 23°C the Gold-Orange Cardinalfish can become ill.
The Gold-Orange Cardinalfish can be kept together with other peaceful fish, such as tetras and danios, but also livebearers like guppies, platies and swordtails as well as with loricariids. Also suitable are dwarf crayfish as well as well reproducing dwarf shrimp species and the popular Amana shrimp. However, it can happen that very small, slow offspring will be eaten.
As omnivores, Gold-Orange Cardinalfish can be fed with commercial flake food and granulated food for omnivorous fish. However, they also pluck at algae coverings and eat the microfauna contained therein, which is why they are therefore also fed with Algae leavestherefore, they may also be offered scalded vegetables and vegetable chips. From time to time they are happy about live food and frozen food like white, red and black mosquito larvae, enchytrae, grindalworms, artemia and daphnia.
Our food recommendation: NatureHolic professional main feed is a professional main feed for all aquarium fish. We supply Hauptfeed in the form of soft granules, which, thanks to its grain size of half a millimeter, can be easily ingested by small to medium-sized fish. The soft consistency resembles the texture of insect larvae in nature and protects the fish mouth from micro-injuries.
Our plant recommendation: Use for the planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
