For example, a biofilm of microorganisms forms on their surface, which shrimps in particular nibble off to their heart's content. The birch bark hearts are untreated and can be used in the aquarium without hesitation. Transport-related abrasion, however, can be easily rinsed off before placing in the water.

The great birch bark hearts not only look good, they also have humic substances, flavonoids and sapoins, which are slowly released into the aquarium water and have a weak antibiotic and anti-inflammatory effect.
