from over 3,000 reviews "The Sapucaia is colloquially the fruit of the Lecythis pisonis Camba type of chestnut from Brazil. It grows to a height of about 30 m and has a trunk diameter of almost one meter. The fruits are round and covered by a hard brown skin. In size, they resemble a small coconut. Once the fruits are ripe, a hole opens at the bottom and releases the fruits inside. This is how the tree reproduces.
The empty shell remains on the tree and falls off by itself some time later.
When you receive your spawning hole, it will be about 5 - 8 cm in size, making it perfect as a retreat for Dwarf crabs and Shrimpbut also other bottom dwellers. Ancystrids can use it to perform their natural brood care, shrimp will also love to graze the biofilm that forms on the spawning cave.
Please note that large-finned fish like Betta Splendens might get stuck in the burrow and suffocate!
First, you should water it so that it stays submerged at all. The best way to do this is to use a simple bucket that you fill with tap water. Here you add the spawning cave. To speed up the process a bit, weigh down the cave with a larger stone. As soon as the cave stays under water by itself, you can put it into your aquarium.
The Sapucaia spawning cave is not problematic for the water values and does not change them. Ideally, the spawning cave can also be spiced up with perching plants or mosses . Small dwarf spear leaf species such as Anubia Nana, A. Gracilis or A. Petite are well suited for this, but also Bucephalandra, as we carry them in our store.
If you want to use the spawning cave as a decorative element, you can also drill a small hole in the side and insert an air hose, this will not only give you a bubbling highlight in the aquarium, you will also enrich your water with vital oxygen.
Tip: As with any decorative element, you should lift the spawning cave once in a while and remove the mulm underneath and inside. In this way you will avoid gamma licks.
