From East Africa comes the great brass mouthbrooder, another great representative from Lake Malawi, but also occurs in the Congo Basin. In its habitat this quite small and colorful cichlid, which is called among other things Pseudocrenilabrus philander dispersus, also likes to give itself. Especially its great brass and copper colors were one of the reasons for its name.
You will receive our brass mouthbrooders as a harem with one male and two females, which are also German offspring and are about 4 cm tall on delivery.
Brass Mouthbrooders have the high back with flat sides typical for perch. They grow to between 10 and 13 cm, with the females, as is so often the case, not quite reaching that size. Their coppery, but also brass-like base color shimmers depending on the incidence of light. Their fins are transparent translucent and colored both yellow and red and blue with speckles. Males may develop red tints on the throat and belly.
Breeding is possible in the aquarium. Brass mouthbrooders lay their eggs in the aquarium, from where they are picked up by the female with her mouth and incubated. In her attempt to also snap at the egg spot on the anal fin of the male, the eggs in her mouth are fertilized by the male. After about three weeks, the female releases fully developed young, which she cares for for a while longer. They can be fed with freshly hatched Artemia nauplii.
Since the brass mouth breeders can sometimes behave "harshly" within their species, their aquarium should have an edge length of 100 cm and be well structured. With stone structures, which are secured against falling over, but also with roots great hiding places and retreat possibilities can be built. Since the perch dig themselves in from time to time, the substrate should therefore be rather sandy and not sharp-edged. They prefer a very good water hygiene and a correspondingly large filter, which also brings enough oxygen into the water. With a total hardness of 2-18 °dGH, as well as a pH-value between 5 and 7,2 they can be maintained well.
Within the species it is recommended to keep them in pairs or in a harem with a clear surplus of females. It is peaceful towards other fish, so that the brass mouthbrooder can be socialized with tetras. Since it feeds among other things on growth and thus also on the smallest crustaceans contained therein, invertebrates are rather not suitable for socialization.
Pseudocrenilabrus dispersus philander is an omnivorous feeding perch, which eats not only small crustaceans and insects in the habitat, but also smaller fish and growth. In the aquarium, however, it can be easily accustomed to flake food or granulated food for omnivorous ornamental fish. Occasionally it also nibbles on algae plates or over-broiled vegetables. With small live and frozen food it can be spoiled very well, because these simulate quasi the microfauna, which they would eat from growth
Our feed recommendation: NatureHolic Cichfeed is a prima staple food for all carnivorous cichlids in the aquarium, which perfectly meets their requirements for food composition. The tasty pearls are also very well eaten by larger cichlids. Thanks to their soft texture, NatureHolic Cichfeed food pearls are gentle on the mouth and can be eaten very well by the fish.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
