Breeding stock - Pink springtails - Live food

Pink springtails, Folsomica candida, are a prime live food culture that is easy to maintain and propagate. Thus, fresh food is always available for the cultivated darlings, which can be fed species-appropriate and nutritious. Ideal also for wild-caught or very fussy dendrobates, such as poison dart frogs, but also for surface-oriented fish. With a final size of 1-2 mm, springtails are also ideal for small snouts. The natural movements of live springtails automatically trigger the innate snapping reflex in many animal species. Pink springtails are easy to cultivate and do not attract attention with unpleasant odors.

You will purchase a 325 ml breeding kit from us, which is already fully prepared: the plastic box has a tightly closing lid, so that the springtails, which sometimes gather under the lid, cannot go exploring. On the humus mixture is a culture of pink springtails, which continue to multiply. To do this, they lay eggs in the substrate, from which after a few days new springtails hatch.

From time to time you should feed the pink springtails with very fine fish food, preferably dust powder or spirulina dust, the easiest way to do this is with a shaker. Be sure to feed sparingly and prevent mold growth in the box. The substrate should be watered occasionally so that a "puddle" is created when the box is held at an angle. Maintain the springtails in the dark at 18-26 °C.

To feed springtails, you can place a small glass pane, such as from a small picture frame, on the base where the springtails will collect and thus can be added to the terrarium or aquarium. Another variation is to hold the box at an angle so that the water collects in one corner and the food animals float on the surface of the water. Remove them with a landing net or a tablespoon and rinse to remove any residual subtrate. Thus prepared, you can feed the springtails to your pets.
