There are few stem plants that could hold a candle to the broad-leaved red parrot leaf Alternanthera reineckii in terms of intensity of coloration. The stems are brown-red to cherry-red in color, as are the leaves on both the upper and lower sides. Since the plant grows somewhat taller at up to 40 cm, it is well suited for the background.
However, the broad-leaved red parrot leaf develops these intense colors only with sufficient CO2 supply and under good light. Without CO2 fertilization and with medium light intensity Alternanthera reineckii can also be kept without problems, the colors then do not pop so strongly.
The stems should be planted with some distance and later cut back about every 6-8 weeks. The resulting shoot tips can be used as cuttings and thus propagate the Broad-leaved Red Parrot Leaf very easily.
