The interesting looking Green Panaque (Panaque sp.) L191 from South America is very unusually marked. While its caudal fin is almost transparent with black stripes, its body is a dark olive green and also has black stripes that combine in the fins to form a reticulated pattern. Its eyes are also green with black pupils. The Green Panaque grows to over 40 inches in length, and its head appears very large compared to its body.
This compatible catfish is a group fish. Older Panaque may eventually be slightly territorial. It can be kept well in community tanks with fish with similar requirements, and is a popular by -fish for discus. The Green Panaque is also compatible with shrimp . For a smaller group of 3-4 animals an aquarium from 150 cm is recommended. Since the Panaque can become very large, older animals should be kept from 300 cm aquarium length.
The aquarium floor space should be very well structured. Green Panaques prefer to hide under roots rather than in caves. However, roots are gnawed and shredded with enthusiasm. This catfish is also very fond of eating plants, as well as algae cover. The Green Panaque is considered a very excellent algae eater.
The Green Panaque likes rather soft to medium hard water in the aquarium, a high oxygen level is important as well as a low organic load. You can do something good for the catfish with a diffuser, oxydator or bubbling stone . The temperature of the aquarium water should be 24-29 °C.
The sexes of the Green Panaque are difficult to distinguish, although the males form long spines behind the gill covers - the so-called odontodes -, but these are sometimes also found in the females.
From aquaristics only accidental breedings are known, usually the Green Panaque is not bred in the aquarium. There are indications that this is not necessarily a cave breeder, but that the eggs are rather laid in shallow pits.
Panaque sp. is an omnivore, it finds plants super and also gnaws soft roots. The Green Panaque should always find these in the aquarium, the fibers of the wood are essential for its digestion. Also vegetable food like vegetables, special catfish sticks and also frozen food are accepted very gladly.
Our food recommendation: The NatureHolic Catfish Feed for all aufwuchs feeding sucking catfish in the aquarium is a balanced tablet food, which does not cloud the water and the fish like to eat. The catfish tablets also contain NatureHolic active ingredient complexes that provide sucking catfish with everything they need for a strong immune system, healthy growth and great, contrasting coloration.
Our plant recommendation: For planting, use NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
