from over 3,000 reviews "Moderlieschen are great schooling fish, which reach just 10 centimeters. Scientifically called Leucaspius delineatus (HECKEL, 1843), these biotope fish belong to the carp family, whose habitat between the Rhine and the Ural Mountains has large occurrences. In some places Moderlieschen are also called sunfish.
Their body structure is spindle-shaped with flat sides and a superior mouth. Their sides shimmer silvery, the back has a brown to olive green coloration, the belly is light. Their large eyes are conspicuous. Especially densely overgrown shore areas belong to their preferred habitats at their place of origin, in the aquarium they should therefore be offered dense planting in places and in the pond a weedy shore zone.
In groups with 10-20 animals the Moderlieschen feels most comfortable and can be maintained in the cold water aquarium already from 100 liters without problems. But also in the mini pond or in the garden pond it cuts a good figure and is winterproof. Since Moderlieschen are surface-oriented and sometimes jump, the aquarium should be better covered. A light-colored gravel or sand is suitable as substrate. The pretty fish also need a filter, which treats the aquarium water and supplies it with oxygen, because this need is somewhat higher for the Moderlieschen. Especially from temperatures above 20° C and if necessary in winter, an outflow stone with an oxygen pump should possibly also be installed. Regular water changes also increase their well-being, because they are quite sensitive to high nitrate and nitrite levels. With a water hardness of up to 18 °dGH and a pH between 6.8-7.6 they are quite easy to care for.
Between April and June is the mating season of the Moderlieschen, which can also be bred in the aquarium. The females are distinguished from the somewhat smaller males by their distinct size. Approximately at the age of 12 months the animals are sexually mature. The females lay transparent eggs, which are about 1 mm in size, in spawning bands. She usually sticks them to plants near the surface, but also to decorations such as roots or stones. After about 1.5 weeks the first young hatch. The male takes over the brood care and fans the clutches to supply oxygen.
Moderlieschen are omnivores, which feed in their habitat mainly on approaching insects and also nibble on algae, but can be spoiled in the aquarium also great with mosquito larvae or daphnia and jumping fish. They can just as well be accustomed to a floating flake food for pond fish.
