The Ancistrus sp. "Veil" is an interesting variation of this classic in aquaristics. The Veil Antennae Catfish is marked like a normal Ancistrus sp., but has wonderful long fins in veil shape. The veil fins make the Ancistrus a super eye-catcher in the aquarium. The popular and extremely robust Ancistrus is originally a loricariid catfish from South America and grows to about 15 cm long.
You can keep the Veiled Antennae Catfish very well together with shrimps and also with peaceful fish. The loricariid catfish rasps off algae coverings and eats remains of fish food and plant remains, algae coverings. Ancistras are uncomplicated eaters, which, in addition to algae and biofilms, like soft vegetables, scalded green food, brown foliage and also some animal food in the form of frozen food. Special catfish bars, chips, cookies, wafers or pellets, for example NatureHolic Catfish Feed in tab form, are also always good.
The Veiled Antenna Catfish likes to live sometimes somewhat hidden and therefore needs in the aquarium superstructures from roots and stones as well as caves, which may be somewhat higher for the Veiled Catfish than for the nominal form. Antenna catfish rasp off real wood to provide themselves with vital fiber, also therefore real roots are very important in the aquarium with Veil Ancistrus.
The Veil Ancistrus catfish is not a bit picky when it comes to water values , the loricariid catfish tolerates soft to hard water. The temperature of the aquarium water should be between 20 and 30 °C.
The males of the Veiled Antennae Catfish can be easily recognized by their antlers. The pronounced antennae on the head distinguish them from the females, which have only short and small antennae.
Although they are often kept alone, Ancistrus are actually quite sociable cat fish, so you should give your Veil Antenna Catfish at least one conspecific. Male Ancistrus are territorial and sometimes fight, but female Ancistrus get along quite well. You should only keep Veiled Ancistrus in pairs if you have buyers for the offspring. Veiled catfish reproduce very well!
Breeding in the aquarium is easy, and Veiled Antennae Catfish are also quite productive. The female lays her clutch of yellow eggs in a cave, the male takes care of the brood. Per litter 50 or more young can come up, which do not need any special treatment to grow up in the aquarium. If you do not want to breed, it is best to keep only females or - with good structure in the aquarium - only males of the Veiled Antenna Catfish in your aquarium.
The Veil Antenna Catfish is an omnivore and will eat food scraps, decomposing plant debris, algae cover and biofilms. The Veiled Antennae Catfish also likes catfish food such as chips, wafers or catfish sticks and our NatureHolic Catfish Feed very much. As a rule, the Veiled Antennae Catfish leaves most aquarium plants alone, only with Echinodorus it cannot say no - here it often comes to the typical feeding damage. You can counteract this reasonably well with sufficient supplementary plant feeding.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend when keeping fish the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
