L236 Jewel line catfish - Hypancistrus sp. 5cm

Hypancistrus sp. L 236 from South America is a loricariid catfish, which is supposed to originate from the Brazilian Rio Iriri. However, in several collection campaigns no such catfish could be caught at the Iriri. Therefore, most experts assume that the Iriri Jewel-Lens Lor icariid actually originates from the lower Rio Xingu. The L 236 form group is extremely large and highly variable. Different lines, with e.g. a high white portion, have developed in the meantime. On a bright, almost white ground these pretty loricariids, which grow up to 12 cm in length and thus tend to stay a little smaller, show a pattern of dark lines and dashes.

Aquariums in which Hypancistrus sp. L236 are kept should not be overly brightly lit. The animals like it a bit more shady. A good structuring by stones and roots is desirable and contributes very much to their well-being. In the hardscape the beautiful striped catfish find retreat possibilities and resting places. An edge length from 100 cm is the minimum for a group of the pretty loricariid catfish. Adult Hypancistrus sp. L 236 hardly eat aquarium plants, but Hypancistrus L236 juveniles will find plants with softer foliage a welcome change in their diet. Hard-leaved plants such as Anubias or Java fern are more likely to be spared than plants with very soft, palatable leaves such as Echinodorus and most stem plants.

Under optimal conditions, the breeding of the beautiful L 236 loricariid is not a problem. For stimulation, lower the conductance and pH and water hardness to the soft range, keep the temperature at 30 °C and perform frequent water changes. These signal the beginning of the mating season for the Iriri Jewelline Loricariid. Increasing the current also encourages spawning. This Hypancistrus sp. is one of the Cave breeders, in which the male guards the brood.

The care of the Jewel Line Harnish Catfish Hypancistrus sp. L236 should be done in soft to medium hard water at a water temperature of about 26-30 °C. A group of 5-8 Hypancistrus sp. L 236 can be maintained from 100 liters aquarium volume.

Hypancistrus sp. L 236 are omnivores, even if the young fish prefer mainly vegetable food. Since the Iriri Jewellines Loricarius live predominantly bottom-oriented, the food should also be chosen sinking.
