Alder cones contain important humic substances and tannins and thus have an exceptionally positive effect on the well-being of shrimps, snails, crayfish, crabs in the aquarium and paludarium. Also loricariids and other ornamental fish are grateful for the addition of alder cones. The cones are also super as a water additive in breeding aquariums, because alder cones can be used as a natural means of preventing spawn fungus.

Shrimp like to graze the biofilms on the small cones, and crayfish and plant-eating catfish also like to eat alder cones directly as food. In addition to tannins and humic substances, alder cones provide them with important fiber and minerals that are important for their digestion.

Alder cones also give the water in your aquarium a beautiful light golden yellow to amber natural hue, making the colors of animals and plants shine even brighter. For a blackwater aquarium with tea-brown water (for angelfish, neons and other South American fish from blackwater biotopes), dose more alder cones accordingly.

You can also leave the alder cones in the aquarium after their effectiveness has ended, until they have decomposed or are eaten. If the active substances are important to you, you should add new cones after about two weeks. Alder cones are a really beautiful decoration, which looks very natural in the aquarium.

Put one cone per 10-20 liters of aquarium content into the aquarium. It has proven to be a good idea to add half of the cones to the aquarium only after waiting for about a week. This way you have a more even supply of humic substances and tannins and you do not have to change all the suppositories at once. If your aquarium water turns too much of a tea brown, remove some of the alder cones, dry them and save them for later use. A partial water change removes excess humic substances and tannins.
